Explore Epcot, Disney's iconic theme park that embodies a futuristic urban vision and its impact on modern city design.
A Journey Through the World of Epcot
The monorail glided smoothly above the palm trees in central Florida, but my attention was elsewhere. I was just 17, sun-kissed and completely focused on the girl who had just stepped onto the train behind me. Her name was Melissa, 16, from Pennsylvania, with curly brown hair and a laugh that was impossible to ignore. She was with her best friend, and their families made a pilgrimage to Walt Disney World in Orlando every year. I was with two guys from my class, one of whom had a family timeshare at the resort.
We were strangers, connected only by our wait for the bus on a humid morning and our shared plan to spend the day at Epcot, the theme park that showcases Walt Disney’s vision of the future. With just one charming laugh, I was drawn to her. We spent four or five magical days together, fleeting moments I can never recreate in the innocence of youth. Fast forward to May 2026, I found myself back at Epcot on a work trip to Florida, eager not only to delve deeper into Disney's vision of a futuristic metropolis but also to savor Moroccan bread and a German beer at the park's World Showcase.
Epcot – A Vision of a Future City
As I walked through familiar places, memories flooded back – riding Spaceship Earth together and strolling through international pavilions. What strikes me now is how that bus ride brought us together, a small part of a larger vision that Disney truly believed in. Disney World’s internal transportation system includes monorails, ferries, gondolas, and millions of bus routes, serving around 50 million visitors a year across an area the size of San Francisco. This system is, in many respects, one of the most successful public transportation networks in the United States.
At the heart of it all is Epcot, designed to exemplify a greater ideal: a functioning city where citizens can move freely, living as Disney envisioned they should. Epcot was intended to be a prototype for the city of the future.
Disney’s Vision and the Present Reality
EPCOT (Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow) was meant to be a real, ever-evolving city that showcased the best of urban planning from around the globe, featuring modern transportation systems and continuous innovation. Although this vision never materialized into a real city, the current park stands as a testament to Disney's vision of harmonious living.
In light of the troubling headlines we face daily, this vision seems more distant than ever. Yet, precisely for this reason, Epcot’s current relevance feels stronger than when it first opened in 1982.

Culture and Transportation at Epcot
Walt Disney didn’t view Epcot as an amusement park. In his later years, he grew increasingly concerned about the issues facing American cities: congestion, uncontrolled sprawl, racial segregation, and complete dependence on cars. He witnessed Los Angeles hollowed out by its freeway system and believed we could do better. His vision was a living city with 20,000 residents built on Florida swampland he had quietly prepared. It would be climate-controlled, dense in the center, and green at the edges, with residents moving underground through an automated network of PeopleMovers.
No private cars. No unemployment, he boldly promised. No slums. A plan radiating from the center, keeping jobs close to homes and open spaces everywhere.
Exploring Epcot Today
As I experienced Epcot, I found it offered many elements Walt had envisioned. Consider what Epcot truly is: a walkable environment that combines multiple functions, where tens of thousands can spend an entire day moving between attractions, restaurants, and public spaces without ever needing to touch a car. Transportation here is clean, frequent, and free.
The park’s renowned World Showcase provides space for 11 countries along a common pathway, with booths primarily run by citizens from those nations, offering menus and drinks that authentically represent their cultures. In the evening, you might sip a Märzen beer at the German Biergarten, then stroll a short distance to enjoy a Kirin at the Japanese pavilion, debating which dish is crispier while savoring a crêpe in France.
It’s remarkable that the international village American cities once dreamed of building is now realized in miniature, operating daily at a practical scale within the park.
Conclusion
With a vision of a future you can design yourself, Epcot continually reminds us that cities don’t have to be as they are today. Differences need not define us. My journey with Melissa began on a bus, but there’s so much more within Disney's hopeful vision for the future.
