Lakeside Life in Western Sweden

Situated south of Lake Vänern, the charming towns of Vänersborg and Trollhättan offer a peaceful retreat for those eager to explore. Vänersborg, located right by the lake, features sandy beaches and elegant architecture that create a wonderfully relaxing atmosphere. A mere 11 km along the Göta River takes you to the vibrant Trollhättan, known for its museums housed in old factories, boats navigating through locks, and a rich tradition of creativity.

Both towns serve as perfect starting points for adventures, thanks to their proximity to waterfalls, gorges, boat tours, and famous forest trails steeped in legend. This is truly the enchanting image of Western Sweden.

Exploring Sweden's Nature

Covering an area of 5,650 km², Lake Vänern is the largest lake in Sweden and the third largest in Europe. Dubbed the "Pacific of Sweden," this stunning environment is a must-visit. Year-round, there are plenty of exciting activities, from ice skating on the natural lake surface and kayaking to cycling along the Vänerleden national route.

You can also rent a motorboat in Vänersborg and explore the sandy beaches where the water warms quickly during summer. To the east of Vänersborg lie Halleberg and Hunneberg, two uniquely shaped mountains located within the Platåbergens, Sweden's first global geopark.

Discovering Trollhättan's History

For centuries, the waterfalls on the Göta River posed challenges for traders seeking to connect Gothenburg with the factories along Lake Vänern. In the 1800s, before the Göta Canal was constructed, the city of Trollhättan invented a series of regulating locks, allowing boats to navigate the 32-meter-high Trollhättan Falls. Today, visitors can still witness timber boats making their way over the “steps” of the Trollhätte Canal.

Additionally, you can delve into the rich automotive history of Saab, founded in 1937, at the museum located within the sustainable Innovatum area. Don't forget to visit the Trollhättan Waterfall Area, which features numerous walking paths leading to ideal viewpoints.

Delicious Eats in Vänersborg

If you find yourself hungry, Strandgatan is famous for its lakeside restaurants specializing in dishes made with Vänern's salmon roe, meat sauce, and mushrooms foraged from the forests. Near Trollhättan’s pedestrian center, Storgatan features a “Walk of Fame” listing movie stars who have visited “Trollywood,” including Nicole Kidman during the filming of Lars von Trier's project.

The Best Time to Visit

Vänersborg is a fantastic base for exploring Lake Vänern. Over a century since renowned Swedish writer Birger Sjöberg referred to Vänersborg as “Little Paris,” the city has retained its refined beauty, especially along the “Cultural Axis,” a road connecting the city’s historic landmarks.

Make sure to visit in July when the Fallens Dagar festival takes place, a time when the sluice gates open, allowing 300,000 liters of water to flow per second.

Useful Information for Vietnamese Travelers

To reach Trollhättan and Vänersborg from Vietnam, you can choose direct flights to Gothenburg-Landvetter Airport. Flights may depart from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, with a travel time of about 14-15 hours, including layovers. From the airport, you can rent a car or use public transport to get around.

Once you arrive, be mindful of the exchange rate, which is currently about 1 SEK (Swedish Krona) equivalent to 2,750 VND. Dining and accommodation costs here are quite reasonable, with an average meal costing around 300,000 VND.

If you plan to drive, it takes about 45 minutes from the airport to Trollhättan. If you prefer public transport, there are numerous bus and train connections between these towns.
