Investing in Credit Cards: Is It Worth It?
The rising costs of credit cards have many people questioning the real value they gain from signing up for a new card. While there are numerous cards with no annual fees, sometimes these costs come with substantial benefits. Some well-known rewards cards do have annual fees, but they often provide exceptional value in the form of statement credits, welcome bonuses, and other perks.

Criteria for Evaluating Credit Cards
We’ve examined four key factors to determine the value of these cards:
- Welcome Bonus: We assign a monetary value to the card's welcome bonus based on TPG evaluations as of April 2026.
- Annual Credits: We calculate credits for expenses such as travel, dining, and other categories.
- Quantifiable Benefits: We tally benefits that can be assigned a specific value, excluding non-measurable factors like lounge access and tier upgrades. We also omit anniversary benefits that only apply in the second year of card ownership.
- Annual Fee: We subtract the annual fee from the overall card value. Even after accounting for this fee, all the cards listed still provide over $1,000 in value during the first year.
