Discovering Zhangjiajie: A Destination Straight Out of a Movie
If you've ever dreamed of wandering into the fantastical world of the movie Avatar, then Zhangjiajie is the place to make that dream come true. After nearly a decade, I returned to this enchanting location and was once again captivated by the romantic scenery amidst towering sandstone pillars. This 3-day itinerary will help you make the most of your time exploring this breathtaking area.
Day 1: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park
Starting from Wulingyuan, it’s just a short 5-minute walk to the East Gate of the park. I recommend waking up early and arriving by 7 AM when the park opens. Don’t forget to purchase your tickets in advance to ensure a smooth entry and quick transportation via the cable car or the Bailong Elevator. The cable car ride takes you to the top in just 25 minutes, revealing a stunning panoramic view of the majestic mountains below.
Helong Park was my first stop. Here, you can admire the Imperial Brush rock pillar, which looks like a giant paintbrush reaching for the sky. When the sun rises, this place transforms into a paradise for capturing beautiful sunrise photographs.

Day 2: Tianmen Mountain
The next morning, I headed to Tianmen Mountain, famous for its glass walkway suspended high in the air. Prepare yourself for the exhilarating feeling of standing above it all, taking in the sweeping views of the mountainous region. Make sure to visit Tianmen Cave, where nature has crafted a magnificent gateway to the sky.
Day 3: Fenghuang Ancient Town
On the final day, I dedicated my time to exploring Fenghuang Ancient Town. Nestled peacefully by the river, this town stands out with its quaint stone-paved streets and ancient houses. In the evening, the shimmering lights reflect off the water, creating an unforgettable romantic atmosphere.
Useful Travel Tips for Zhangjiajie
To avoid the crowds, try to arrive early or explore less-known spots. Don’t forget to bring a light jacket and comfortable shoes for walking through these adventurous trails. As for costs, around 3 million VND should suffice for a 3-day experience here, covering everything from entrance fees to meals.
