I've made a big decision: to visit all 50 states in the U.S. before July 4th, the 250th birthday of this great nation. Right now, I have 11 states left to explore: Arkansas, Kansas, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Indiana, Nebraska, Iowa, Idaho, Washington, and Alaska. It sounds challenging, but
Exploring All 50 States: A Journey Full of Surprises
I've made a big decision: to visit all 50 states in the U.S. before July 4th, the 250th birthday of this great nation. Right now, I have 11 states left to explore: Arkansas, Kansas, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Indiana, Nebraska, Iowa, Idaho, Washington, and Alaska. It sounds challenging, but it's a goal I've set for myself.
Suggestions from Friends Around the Globe
Did you know that I've received hundreds of emails from all over, filled with advice and suggestions from Fairbanks to Visby, Sweden? Some are from retired biologists, others from teachers, and even an 87-year-old priest, all eagerly sharing interesting spots to check out.
One of the most frequently mentioned destinations is the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas. This world-class art museum, built by the Walton family, is definitely worth a visit.
Unique Destinations
South Dakota stands out with Badlands National Park and Mt. Rushmore. While Rushmore is famous, many have suggested I visit Crazy Horse or Custer State Park for a more meaningful experience.
Washington also boasts numerous attractions, from its ferry system and Olympic Peninsula to the Hoh Rainforest and Mt. Rainier. Not to mention the apple orchards in Yakima Valley, known for its unique volcanic soil.

Local Culinary Delights
In Nebraska, many have mentioned Carhenge and the migration of sandhill cranes. A must-try dish is the coney dog at Coney Island in Nebraska, which has been served by the original owner's son, maintaining that classic vibe.
Iowa offers its own quirks, like the city of Mason with a hotel designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, and being the hometown of Captain Kirk.
Other Fascinating Discoveries
Idaho is renowned for its pristine natural beauty. A biologist sent me a list of 15 hidden gems not mentioned in any guidebook, including underground rivers and seismic cracks left from the 1983 earthquake.
And when it comes to Alaska, the only advice I received was: just go there. A resident of 45 years told me that you don’t need any advertising gimmicks to see the true beauty of Alaska.
A Call for Further Exploration
The states of Kansas and Indiana have received fewer suggestions in my inbox. Kansas is known for being 'flat,' but it still has intriguing spots like Monument Rocks and Lawrence, rich in war history. Indiana has many secrets waiting to be uncovered, and I'm eager to learn more about it.
So, I'm inviting you to share your insights: What have I missed? Which places are worth exploring more? I have four months left and will carry that list with me. Please email me if you have anything to share!
