On August 2, 2027, a total solar eclipse will sweep across 10 countries in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Dubbed the 'Eclipse of the Century', this event is expected to deliver a maximum duration of 6 minutes and 23 seconds, significantly longer than recent eclipses, including the major one in North America in 2024.

While total solar eclipses occur approximately every 18 months somewhere around the globe, the maximum duration typically lasts only 2 to 4 minutes in areas close to the center of the path. The extended duration of the 2027 eclipse is one of the key reasons it is considered such a remarkable event.

Path and Timing of the Eclipse

The path of the 2027 eclipse will traverse through Spain, Gibraltar, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Somalia, with the longest duration occurring in Luxor, Egypt. Luxor promises an exhilarating experience as the Valley of the Kings and the Nile River are enveloped in darkness at midday.

During the eclipse, viewers will experience a swift transition from day to night, as temperatures drop and the sky darkens. Only the sun's outer atmosphere, known as the corona, will be visible, creating a mesmerizing halo effect.

Must-Visit Destinations

To fully experience the optimal phase of the eclipse, known as "totality," viewers must position themselves within a narrow area called the "path of totality," which will be approximately 160 miles wide for the 2027 eclipse. This extended duration is facilitated by three factors: the moon will be at its closest position to Earth, Earth will be at its farthest from the sun, and the eclipse's path will be near the equator.

Famous locations to consider visiting during this time include Luxor in Egypt and the sun-soaked coastal cities of southern Spain, along with the port city of Tangier in Morocco.

Luxor is set to experience the maximum duration of the 2027 eclipse. This city is renowned for its plethora of ancient temples, tombs, and monuments from Egypt's rich history. The city is divided into two banks: the East Bank, featuring the Karnak and Luxor temples, and the West Bank, home to the Valley of the Kings. The West Bank, with its numerous tombs of pharaohs, including Tutankhamun and Ramses II, will be an ideal spot to witness the eclipse.
