7 Essential Items for Conquering the Wilderness

When preparing for a hiking adventure, organizing your gear is crucial. Since everything needs to fit on your back, I pay close attention to every gram and ounce. However, there are times when I want to pack a few non-essential items to enhance my comfort.

From my previous trips, I’ve discovered a few indispensable items for hiking that I always bring along. Below are seven essentials that I never leave behind on camping or climbing excursions.

1. Buff

Never forget to pack a buff! Whether it’s winter or summer, these versatile tube-shaped pieces of fabric are incredibly useful. On chilly or rainy days, a buff keeps my neck warm. During hot days, I can dampen it with water to cool off or use it to wipe sweat from my face. I often wear it while sleeping to cover my face from the cold in the tent without having to crawl into my sleeping bag.

2. Mosquito Repellent / Thermacell

Some may argue that mosquito repellent isn’t essential, but if you’re hiking in Canada during the summer, you’ll definitely want to be prepared for pesky bites. I always carry mosquito coils because they are small, lightweight, and affordable. I usually store them in a sturdy plastic container to prevent breakage, along with a lighter and a stand to keep the coil off the ground. Additionally, you should bring a high-DEET mosquito spray. I typically go for Ben’s with a 30% concentration in an aerosol form. Recently, Thermacell has also gained popularity. I find them effective, though the cost of the refills and gas can be a bit steep.

3. Sit Pad

A sit pad is one of my favorite non-essential items. They’re compact and easily foldable to fit in the side pocket of my backpack (next to the mosquito spray or bear spray). It makes sitting on rocks more comfortable during snack breaks, keeps my pants dry, and cushions those wooden seats around the campfire. Plus, it helps keep me warm on chilly nights. I always have a sit pad in my backpack.

4. Rain Jacket

While it may seem obvious, a quality rain jacket is truly crucial. It not only keeps you dry but also serves as an outer layer to retain warmth. I often wear my rain jacket on windy, cold days and when sitting around the campfire. If I’m worried about sparks damaging my jacket, I usually bring along a fleece as well. It’s warm and less likely to tear.

5. String Lights

When hiking, you’ll likely try to save every gram of weight in your pack. However, a little bit of romantic ambiance can elevate your camping experience or picnic meal, and that’s where battery-operated string lights come in. They create a cheerful atmosphere for those evenings spent outdoors.

6. Trekking Poles

Another item I often carry is trekking poles. While they aren’t always necessary, depending on the terrain and your ability, they can be incredibly helpful and reduce your exertion by 25% to 40%. I typically bring poles when tackling steep climbs or when I know the area will be wet. Trekking poles are also essential when crossing streams or rivers, as they provide better stability.

7. Sleeping Pad Pump

This is a must-have for camping, especially in the woods. It’s small, lightweight, and saves me a lot of time. This pump not only recharges but also doubles as a lantern for the tent. It inflates my sleeping pad in about 90 seconds, and I no longer have to blow it up manually, which can leave me feeling dizzy after a long day of hiking.

I know that with these items, my trips are much more comfortable and enjoyable. So don’t hesitate to pack a few non-essentials that can bring you comfort on your adventures!
