Air Canada has recently expanded its unique café concept in Montréal and Vancouver, offering travelers a new, efficient experience with quick service.

Air Canada Expands Café at the Airport

Air Canada is taking its innovative grab-and-go café concept, which it considers one of the smartest recent changes in airport services, to new heights. The airline has just opened additional cafés in both Montréal (YUL) and Vancouver (YVR), building on the success of its original location at Toronto Pearson Airport (YYZ).

Cafés for Quick Connections

Typically, airport lounges are designed with the assumption that travelers have time to relax. However, with tight connections and sprawling airports, many passengers find themselves unable to sit back in a lounge between flights. They need something quick, high-quality, and convenient to take with them—exactly what Air Canada Café provides.

New Locations in Montréal and Vancouver

Now, Air Canada has doubled down on this concept at two major hubs. In Vancouver, a second café has opened in the domestic terminal near gates 50–51, featuring 84 seats along with a fully stocked bar, barista-prepared coffee, and local-inspired dishes like bao and fresh kimbap. The menu highlights seasonal and locally sourced ingredients, reflecting the rich culinary landscape of Vancouver.

Signature Dishes at the New Café

Customers can indulge in specialties such as tender grilled pork bao, vegetarian curry bao, vegetarian kimbap, and sweet treats from the renowned Granville Island bakery, Lee’s Donuts. Meanwhile, Montréal has also unveiled a new café in the U.S. departure area, featuring 62 seats dedicated to serving local coffee and specialties like smoked meat sandwiches, bagels, and pastries.

High-Quality Coffee is the Highlight

I’m particularly looking forward to the lounge here, as the Maple Leaf Lounge for U.S. flights is rather dull, and the Air Canada café at YUL does not offer barista-made coffee, relying instead on automated machines. Both cafés emphasize food and beverages sourced from local origins, along with quick service tailored for busy travelers.

Future Prospects

I believe this is the lounge model of the future that we will see more of in the U.S. in the coming years. This concept actually originated from the Lufthansa Senator Café in Munich (MUC) and has spread to the U.S. with United Club Fly lounges in Denver (DEN) and Houston (IAH), as well as the Provisions by Admirals Club model of American Airlines in Charlotte (CLT). The bottom line is that good coffee is my number one priority at any airport lounge.

A Smart Grab-and-Go Space is Essential

These grab-and-go lounges offer a pleasant escape from the crowded traditional lounges. The U.S. airline business model relies on promotions and the profitability of premium card memberships. However, lounges have not developed quickly enough to meet demand, leading to long lines, especially at Delta Sky Clubs.

Conclusion

Air Canada’s café concept is expanding with new locations in Montréal and Vancouver. It’s a simple idea executed brilliantly: premium food and beverages coupled with fast service, making it perfect for short connections and addressing lounge overcrowding. If there’s a lounge model I wish more airlines would replicate, it’s this one.
