Air New Zealand is set to introduce bunk beds in economy class, a groundbreaking innovation in the airline industry, scheduled to launch in 2026.

Introducing Air New Zealand's Skynest

Air New Zealand is gearing up to unveil one of the most significant initiatives in economy class aviation: bunk beds. This will be the first time an airline offers such a service to passengers, creating a unique experience for long-haul flights. However, not all travelers will have the chance to enjoy this innovative offering.

Details About the Skynest Bunk Beds

The Skynest will feature six beds, each measuring 80 inches long and 23 inches wide, arranged in a V-shape across three tiers. Each bed will come with bedding, a pillow, a blanket, and a privacy curtain, along with a “Nestcessities” kit that includes an eye mask, socks, earplugs, hygiene products, and skincare items from the Aotea brand. Notably, each bunk will be equipped with a USB port, reading light, and ventilation.

This design mirrors the beds used by flight attendants, allowing passengers to enjoy a sense of privacy similar to that of the crew cabin.

Location of Skynest on the Aircraft

The Skynest will be installed on Air New Zealand's Boeing 787-9 aircraft, positioned between the business class and economy class sections. Specifically, it will occupy the space of two middle rows of seats, allowing six customers to use the beds in an area equivalent to six economy seats.

When Will Air New Zealand Launch Skynest?

Air New Zealand plans to start selling Skynest beds from May 18, 2026, with operations commencing in November 2026. This service is expected to be available on flights between Auckland (AKL) and New York (JFK). The airline also intends to retrofit its existing 787 aircraft, although the timeline for this upgrade is yet to be determined.

How to Book a Skynest Bed

The bunk beds will not be available during takeoff and landing. Passengers will not be able to book a bed for the entire flight but can reserve it for 4-hour intervals. After each session, a gentle light will indicate the end of the time slot. This means that on the longest flights, the beds can be rented out up to three times, although initially, they will only be available for two sessions. There will be a 30-minute preparation time between sessions for staff to change the bedding and prepare for the next passenger.

The cost for each Skynest session will be $495, which is approximately 11 million VND, translating to about $125 per hour.

Upgrade Options with Skycouch

In addition to Skynest, Air New Zealand has developed the Skycouch concept, allowing passengers to convert an entire row of economy seats into a couch. While this design is convenient for couples or families, the length of just 49 inches (1.24m) may not be sufficient for adults to sleep comfortably. Recently, United Airlines has also been working on a similar concept called United Relax Row.

Conclusion and Experience

The launch of the Skynest bunk beds will mark a turning point in economy class flying. By adding six bunk beds to the Boeing 787, Air New Zealand will provide passengers with the opportunity to experience more comfortable sleep on long-haul flights. Although the rollout may be somewhat delayed, this is undoubtedly an eagerly anticipated project.

If you are planning a trip to New Zealand or the United States in the near future, don’t miss the chance to experience this exciting service!
