Exploring AlUla: Where the Past Meets the Future

There's truly no place quite like AlUla, a land that is reviving from its glorious past. Located in the northwest of Saudi Arabia, AlUla was once home to leopards and is now witnessing a renaissance with projects aimed at restoring the wilderness of the desert.

As I approached AlUla, I found it hard to take my eyes off the breathtaking scenery from the airplane window. Majestic rocky hills, deep ravines, and endless stretches of desert unfolded like a stunning natural painting. I felt a surge of excitement at the thought of stepping foot in a place where ancient rock tombs and historic relics awaited my exploration.

AlUla - A Crossroad of Histories

AlUla not only welcomes travelers from around the globe but also serves as a stop for many pilgrims. It was once part of the incense trade route connecting the East and the West, where caravans would pause to rest, exchange goods, and share stories.

Today, AlUla continues to be a captivating destination for history enthusiasts. The Hegra heritage site, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, has garnered significant attention and has become a vital part of the region's cultural and ecological restoration strategy.

Strolling Through Old Town AlUla

I visited Old Town AlUla, which dates back to the 12th century. Walking along the pedestrian-friendly Old Town Walk, I noticed the area's transformation with new restaurants and shops springing up. However, stepping off the main street felt like entering a maze of old adobe buildings, some of which are undergoing restoration.

While on a tour with a guide named Wedad, I heard stories of life in the past. She shared that her great-grandfather lived in this old town, farming and running a shop for pilgrims heading to Makkah.

Discovering Al Joud Farm

Not far from AlUla lies Al Joud Farm, open to the public for meals and tours. I was greeted by the farm's owner, Mohammed al Joud, who not only cultivates dates but also experiments with sustainable farming methods. I was particularly impressed by the tahini well, where visitors can dip dates to enjoy a delicious treat.

In addition to date palms, Mohammed grows a variety of other organic fruits and vegetables and collaborates with the Royal Commission for AlUla to test smart, water-saving farming techniques. Water conservation has become a top priority here.

The Glorious History of AlUla

My journey also took me back to the golden past of this region. Enass Alsharif, an enthusiastic young woman, guided me to Jabal Ithlib, which houses remnants of the Nabataean kingdom. This area was once a significant trading hub due to its abundant water supply and fertile land.

As we paused in an open space within the rock, Enass speculated that this could have been a meeting place for past leaders. Yet, much remains to be discovered about its true purpose. Seeing ancient inscriptions carved into the stone walls made me feel as if I was walking through the currents of history.

A Promising Conclusion

From the ancient buildings and sustainable farms to the rich stories, AlUla is a place full of surprises, undergoing a remarkable revival. Witnessing this landscape gradually come back to life, I felt as though I was contributing to the new chapter of this land's story. A trip to AlUla is not just a journey; it’s an exploration of identity and the historical values of this remarkable place.
