American Airlines has launched trading cards for pilots, a move initiated by the union rather than the airline itself. This exciting yet challenging step marks a significant shift for the airline.
American Airlines and the Trading Card Race
At long last, American Airlines has joined the ranks of airlines offering trading cards for pilots. It’s surprising that they were one of the few airlines without such a product until now, and the introduction of these cards has certainly caught many off guard.
Comparing with Other Airlines
Airlines like Delta, United, Alaska, Spirit, and Frontier have all rolled out trading cards for their pilots. Delta has even produced up to 3 million cards in 2024 and plans to reach 5 million by 2025, with a total of 68 different card designs. United pilots carry six different cards, while Alaska re-released a set of eight cards just last year.
Spirit is also in the game, having launched six new cards in February, coinciding with the airline's second bankruptcy. Frontier has taken a unique approach by designing their cards with animal tail graphics, allowing not just pilots but flight attendants to distribute them as well.
The American Airlines Trading Card
Unlike its competitors, American Airlines’ trading cards are not produced by the airline itself but rather by the pilots' union. This decision was made to prevent pilots from feeling awkward when customers ask for their cards and to ensure they remain engaged during passenger interactions.
Unique Card Designs
The new trading cards come in various designs that are perfect for collectors. They feature iconic aircraft models like the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, Boeing 737, and Airbus A321 flying over destinations such as Paris and Sydney. Notably, there’s a retro design of the Boeing 777-300 to commemorate the airline’s 100th anniversary, mirroring the paint scheme of Douglas DC-3 planes that operated over 90 years ago.

Mixed Reactions from Pilots
However, some pilots are not entirely pleased with the new trading cards, not due to their design but because of the costs associated with obtaining them. One pilot expressed that this could be a waste of union contributions.
On the flip side, others argue that the cost is reasonable and that the cards serve as a useful tool for pilots, while also reflecting poorly on the airline itself.
American Airlines' Financial Challenges
The union has pointed out that the management has struggled to control the situation and has been unable to turn things around, leaving the airline with unsatisfactory financial results. American Airlines is grappling with revenue issues and needs to attract more customers. Therefore, they have taken this situation into their own hands; although this move is small, it is embarrassing for the airline not to provide standard industry benefits that even Spirit and Frontier can manage.
Reasons for the Airline's Struggles
The absence of pilot trading cards at American Airlines is a clear indication of deeper issues within the company. The airline has focused on competing with Spirit and Frontier, prioritizing cost-cutting over revenue growth, even as customers are willing to spend more on better products.
Management Solutions
CEO Robert Isom has emphasized the need to avoid unnecessary expenditures. However, this approach may overlook the finer details that create value in the product. Over the past year, American Airlines has begun to explore changes in this area, but there are still thousands of issues that need addressing.
Passenger Perspective
As a passenger, I find the launch of trading cards to be a fantastic idea, not just for collecting. It’s a wonderful way to encourage pilots to engage with passengers and vice versa, making the airline feel more personable.
How to Request a Trading Card
If you want to request a trading card, the best approach is to ask a flight attendant when you board the plane. They can assist you in checking if you can visit the cockpit and politely ask the pilots for a card. Of course, you can also ask the pilots directly whenever you see them, but having a flight attendant help can prevent you from bothering them or making them feel uncomfortable.
