Discover the unique appam at Maxwell Food Centre, where you can enjoy creative versions from Mrs. Nguyen Thi Kieu Khanh.

Delicious Appam at Maxwell Food Centre

Did you know that we have our own version of pancakes? It may sound similar to prata, but I'm talking about appam! Mr. Appam, located in Maxwell Food Centre, is definitely a must-visit spot when you're here.

The Journey of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Kieu Khanh

This eatery has an interesting story. Mrs. Nguyen Thi Kieu Khanh, the owner, initially wanted to sell Vietnamese dishes but found herself with an Indian curry stall due to a bid. Instead of giving up, she taught herself how to make appam when she realized there were no places in the area serving this dish.

Getting to the Restaurant

Getting to Mr. Appam is easy, just about an eight-minute walk from subway stations like Chinatown, Telok Ayer, and Tanjong Pagar. Its central location makes Mr. Appam an ideal stop for food lovers seeking unique culinary experiences.

The Special Flavor of Appam

Mrs. Nguyen has her own unique recipe for the appam batter, which requires a 24-hour fermentation instead of the usual 8 to 12 hours. This creates a distinctive sour flavor, making each appam unique. One of the special dishes served here is the Banana Appam (S$3.80) and Chocolate Appam (S$4).

Exploring the Menu at Mr. Appam

I tried the Putu Mayam (S$3 for 2 pieces) and the Butterfly Pea Gula Melaka Coconut Appam (S$3.20). Since Mrs. Nguyen makes each appam to order, the wait time can be a bit longer, especially during peak hours. While it may take some time, the freshness is definitely worth it.

Review of the Putu Mayam

The Putu Mayam I tried was nothing too different from what I've had before. The noodle-like strands were easy to cut and slightly moist, making them easy to chew. Although the dish was somewhat bland, pairing it with shredded coconut and brown sugar made it much tastier. The coconut still had a bit of moisture, giving each bite a creamy feel.

Experience with the Gula Melaka Appam

Next up was the Butterfly Pea Gula Melaka Coconut Appam. This time, I wasn’t drawn in by its appearance but rather its flavor. However, I was disappointed when the first bite turned out to be bland, with the sourness overpowering not just the initial taste but also the shredded coconut. The brown sugar didn’t help much either, making the culinary experience feel like a letdown.

Conclusion About Mr. Appam

Despite a few flavor challenges, I believe there is something for everyone’s taste. If you’re not used to the sourness of appam, I recommend trying the Putu Mayam. I really enjoyed my time at Mr. Appam; the lack of places serving appam and putu mayam at Maxwell Food Centre truly makes this a perfect spot for anyone craving these dishes.
