What started as a delightful weekend trip quickly turned into a nightmare when my flight was canceled. However, thanks to my accumulated points, I found a way to get home.
Unexpected Turns in My Journey
My weekend getaway with my mom was going splendidly until I received a text from the airline at 4 AM: "We apologize, your flight has been canceled." I was at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare in Chicago, gearing up to return to Atlanta after enjoying some fun days in the Windy City. A storm had swept through the night before, and the weather in Georgia looked grim.
Rubbing my eyes, I wondered if there was truly no way to get back. Delta only had standby options available, so I decided to leverage my loyalty points to explore other solutions.
Facing the Cancellation Dilemma
In an ideal world, airlines would automatically rebook you on the next flight. But when emergencies arise, like in my case, that isn't always the case. That was exactly the situation my mom and I found ourselves in while trying to return to Atlanta from O'Hare.
I checked the app for options but found no feasible flights available—only standby, which wasn’t helpful at all.
Expanding the Search to Nearby Airports
Knowing I needed to get back South, I started considering nearby airports. I was familiar with Greenville-Spartanburg Airport in South Carolina and Charlotte Douglas in North Carolina. In situations like this, if you really need to get home, expanding your search beyond the original airport can be a game changer.
Consider flying to nearby cities and renting a car to reach your final destination. While it may not always be convenient, it’s certainly better than being stuck without a way home.

Using Points for Last-Minute Availability
As prices for flights on the same day skyrocketed—especially during a time when many flights were getting canceled—using my loyalty points became a fantastic option. We didn’t want to shell out $600 to $900 just to get home, so those points were my saving grace.
The more diverse your points collection, the more options you have. I had a decent stash of points from American Express Membership Rewards, Bilt Points, Capital One miles, and Chase Ultimate Rewards.
Booking with Distance-Based Reward Charts
If you know which programs use distance-based reward charts rather than pricing, you'll know where to start your search when ticket prices soar. Programs like Air Canada Aeroplan and British Airways Club typically have fixed charts. I didn’t hesitate to select Atmos Rewards, as the flight from O'Hare to Atlanta required only 4,500 points for a one-way economy ticket.
Making Backup Reservations
If you're traveling on a day with numerous cancellations and delays, making a backup reservation with points is a great way to ensure you can still reach your destination. When I arrived at O'Hare, I noticed that flights back to Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina were still being canceled. As our new flight was delayed, I began preparing a Plan B.
With Atmos Rewards, I knew that if I canceled the ticket before departure, I would receive a full refund. Thus, having two active tickets gave me a higher chance of making it home.
Understanding Point Refund Policies
The most important thing to remember is that transfers are irreversible. When I transferred an additional 10,000 Bilt points for my backup ticket, I couldn't get them back, but my Atmos Rewards points would return to my account quickly.
The Value of Points in Cancellation Scenarios
I had never found my loyalty points to be more essential than at that moment. That’s how I managed to use my Bilt points to get home during this challenging situation. If you want to boost your points, consider credit cards that offer transferable rewards, like American Express Membership Rewards or Capital One Miles.
