Discover the Unique Cheung Fun at Toa Payoh

I have a soft spot for chee cheong fun, whether it's the traditional version drizzled with sweet sauce and sprinkled with sesame seeds or the Hong Kong style filled with meat or seafood. This time, I stumbled upon a completely different version at Grandpa Homemade Cheung Fun in Toa Payoh West Market: chee cheong fun with vibrant pink and green wrappers!

Forget the usual fillings like char siew or shrimp; here, you can find delightful combinations like egg and vegetables, corn and sausage, or chicken and pork. The variety is simply impressive! I watched the vendor pour a mixture of blended spinach onto a large metal tray, then sprinkle it with Chinese sausage and corn. After that, he placed the entire tray into the steamer and set the timer. It was quite a sight!

Exciting Variations at Grandpa Homemade Cheung Fun

I kicked off my breakfast adventure with the Egg + Veggie option ($4.90 SGD), adding a dragon fruit wrapper for an extra $0.20 SGD. The presentation was absolutely eye-catching! My friend Lily joined me and was a bit hesitant to try it because the colors were so unfamiliar.

Unlike the typical smooth cheung fun, this one had a wrinkled texture and tiny black specks from the dragon fruit. The dragon fruit flavor was subtle, as it’s not known for its strong taste. The egg paired perfectly with the wrapper, and each piece of slightly cooked Chinese lettuce added a satisfying crunch with every bite.

Next, I tried the Corn + Sausage ($5.80 SGD) with a Spinach wrapper for an additional $0.20 SGD. Lily exclaimed, "It looks like chendol!" and I couldn't agree more. It resembled a dessert more than a savory dish.

The spinach flavor in this one was a bit more pronounced, even though the wrapper wasn’t completely thin. The corn kernels were like tiny pockets of sunshine, adding a natural sweetness to the savory dish. The Chinese sausage was delicious, and the soy sauce tied everything together like a happy family.

Final Thoughts on Grandpa Homemade Cheung Fun

Finally, I returned to the classic chee cheong fun: Shrimp + Char Siew ($5.80 SGD) with the regular wrapper. The shrimp here were quite large and tasted much better than those at other places. All three dishes had a soft wrapper that hit the perfect mark for me.

To wrap up my experience, I was surprised that the Egg + Veggie dish, which I initially underestimated, ended up being my favorite. With so many different variations, each visit to Grandpa Homemade Cheung Fun promises a uniquely delightful experience!
