Discover Smart Ways to Save on Travel Costs for 2026
After nearly a decade of globe-trotting, I made the leap from restaurant management to travel writing. With over 70 countries under my belt and various modes of transportation like trains, ferries, buses, and planes, I've picked up plenty of tips for traveling on a budget. With a modest income, I've had to get creative to enjoy travel without breaking the bank.
I started by documenting weekend getaways to lesser-known destinations in Europe, all for under £100, squeezing in trips during my time off from the restaurant. However, these great deals are becoming harder to find these days. This has pushed me to be more inventive when it comes to saving money on my travels.
Hunt for Luxurious Hotel Deals
Accommodation is often one of the biggest expenses on a trip. While many believe that camping or hostels are the only budget-friendly options, that’s not the case. One tip I regularly use is to avoid booking through major Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) due to their high commission fees. Instead, I prefer to email hotels directly to ask for the best rates or join websites that offer member-exclusive deals.
One of my go-to sites is Private Upgrades, where members can access unpublished perks like discounted room rates or complimentary upgrades. Signing up is free, and it allows you to snag enticing deals without worrying about breaching contracts with OTAs.

Travel During the Off-Season
Traveling during the off-peak season is one of my favorite ways to save money while enjoying a more tranquil atmosphere. For instance, I took an impromptu trip around Andalucía in February or visited the Dolomites in April despite the gloomy weather. However, I've noticed that the off-season isn't what it used to be.
Due to climate change, some Mediterranean destinations are becoming more appealing in the winter, causing the prices for peak and off-peak seasons to fluctuate. I often rely on public travel data to determine the cheapest times to travel.
Utilize Local Train Tickets
Train travel is making a comeback in Europe, and I'm all for this trend. Instead of opting for Interrail or Eurail passes, I explore budget-friendly high-speed train providers like Italo in Italy or Iryo in Spain.
Many countries offer special train tickets that can significantly cut costs. For example, the Deutschland-Ticket in Germany allows unlimited travel on regional trains for under 70 Euros a month.
Sign Up for Fare Alerts
Airfare, especially for international flights, often represents a large portion of travel expenses. Therefore, I highly recommend signing up for fare alerts to ensure you don’t miss out on any airline deals.
