Bill Maher has taken a jab at United Airlines' in-flight meals while boasting about his Delta SkyMiles. A humorous look at contrasting opinions in politics and travel.
Bill Maher and United Airlines' Food
With his signature blend of humor and sharp wit, Bill Maher, host of "Real Time," recently criticized the in-flight meals offered by United Airlines while flaunting his Delta SkyMiles account. During his "New Rules" segment at the end of Friday's show, Maher quipped, "But that’s life. Being an adult often means choosing between two bad options... like the food on United." Given that Maher seems to fly privately most of the time, this could just be a comedic attempt by his writers or AI to stir up humor. I wouldn't be surprised if he avoids flying with United in the future.
Is Maher Right?
He certainly has a point, given the track record over the years. The majority of United's premium in-flight meals still lag behind those of American Airlines and Delta Air Lines. However, the airline has made significant strides in its menu and continues to improve. The bison steak I tried was definitely worth the detour.
In-Flight Dining Still Needs Improvement
You can check out the segment where Maher discusses this topic below (I've prepared it for you), but I also recommend watching the full clip. Regular readers know that Maher and I often view the world quite differently, especially on matters of faith. Nonetheless, we do agree on several points, and if you take the time to watch his entire commentary, I think this pragmatism makes a lot of sense.
Political Debate
The political discourse, marked by idealistic purity from both extreme sides, is quite fascinating, akin to the naive statement by Pope Leo that "war should always be rejected" (not that I support the war in Iran). However, in reality, that’s not feasible. There need to be adults in the room (not self-satisfied individuals who think they are Jesus), and I’m grateful that the Pope’s theories didn’t dominate during the American Civil War or World War II.

Space Science Isn’t Always Practical
Another issue Maher raised is his belief that the entire Artemis mission is a waste of money and lacks impressive outcomes. Speaking about this mission, he shared, "I’m not a fan of going to the moon. The question I’ve asked since I was a kid is: Why? Why? Is it worth the money? What are we doing there? It’s just a damn rock. I think we could spend our money more wisely."
Space Science and Reality
"If we’re close to achieving something in space, and by the way, outer space isn’t that far away, it’s right next door. It’s nothing! I’ve looked this up. Here’s the universe, here’s the moon, 250,000 miles away. I have more miles than that on Delta!"
The Moon and Delta SkyMiles
While 250,000 miles is indeed the distance from Earth to the moon, 25,000 SkyMiles is only enough for a one-way flight from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. So, is Maher correct about United and the moon mission?
