Employees will also be invited to invest in a 5% stake, ensuring that the government retains a 50.1% share. Prime Minister Luis Montenegro has expressed confidence, stating he “believes there will be significant interest in this opportunity.”
Challenges in the Privatization Process
The earlier privatization attempts hit a snag in early 2025 following the collapse of the center-right coalition government. However, after the elections in May 2025, the coalition returned to power, albeit without a parliamentary majority, which could complicate the sale. Historically, TAP hasn't been a highly profitable airline, but its situation has improved over time. In 2021, the airline reported a record loss of 1.6 billion euros due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bright Spots in TAP’s Business Operations
The airline has bounced back following a government investment of 3.2 billion euros aimed at restructuring the business. In recent years, TAP has returned to profitability, although the profits remain modest. Over the last three years (2022-2024), the airline recorded profits of 65.6 million euros, 177.3 million euros, and 53.7 million euros, respectively. While TAP Air Portugal may not be a powerhouse in profitability, it boasts a crucial network connecting to Brazil, Africa, and the United States, offering significant strategic value to other airline groups. Major players like Air France-KLM, IAG, and Lufthansa have all expressed interest in TAP, mainly due to the airline's strong presence in Brazil.
Challenges in Collaborating with TAP
A key question arises: how will operations in North America complement the existing agreements of these airline groups? TAP has historically operated independently in North America, often offering lower fares than competitors and providing attractive prices across all classes, including one-way tickets.
