Have you ever struggled with packing for a trip? Here are some effective tips to help you travel light with just a carry-on, while still having all the essentials you need.
Packing Light: The Art and Science
Packing for a trip can be quite the art, especially when you're trying to minimize your load. I've found myself caught in the cycle of overpacking, dragging around a heavy suitcase filled with items I never ended up using. We’ve all experienced the rush to the airport, lugging oversized bags filled with unnecessary stuff.
According to a survey, nearly a third of travelers often carry more than they really need. As someone who loves to travel, I've realized that effective packing is a crucial skill, especially after many trips through airports, train stations, and unexpected layovers. I've come to understand that less truly is more. Dragging a heavy suitcase only complicates your journey, and the risk of losing your luggage adds an extra layer of stress.
Choosing the Right Luggage
The first and most important step is to select a compact, lightweight suitcase that still offers enough space for your essentials. If you're traveling with only a carry-on, you need a bag that can expand and fits within the airline’s overhead compartment. I often use my Briggs & Riley expandable carry-on, which gives me a little extra room while still being cabin-friendly.
This suitcase features 360-degree spinner wheels, making it easy to maneuver in tight spaces. Another exciting option I've come across is the Cotopaxi Allpa Roller, which has a unique design combining a sturdy exterior with a soft interior, offering better support and flexibility than traditional suitcases.
Utilizing Packing Cubes
If you struggle with organizing your belongings while traveling, packing cubes are the perfect solution. They not only help you arrange your items systematically but also save space in your suitcase. I typically use three to five packing cubes to categorize my items.

For instance, a large packing cube is great for jeans or jackets, while a medium one is perfect for t-shirts. I use a small cube for underwear and socks. Plus, I always bring an extra cube for dirty clothes on the way back.
Simplifying Tech Gear
I recently purchased a tech pouch that keeps my gadgets organized and free from tangled cords. Instead of bringing multiple chargers, I opted for a wireless Lion Energy charger that can power my phone, watch, and headphones simultaneously, reducing cable clutter.
Selecting Lightweight and Versatile Fabrics
Choosing outfits for a long trip can be challenging. However, I often focus on items from the same brand to ensure they mix and match easily. Durable fabrics from brands like Jungmaven, Outerknown, or Patagonia are my go-to choices.
For denim, I love Outerknown jeans that are soft, comfortable, and stylish. A simple tank top and t-shirt are versatile, easy to layer, and perfect for various occasions. Linen is also a fantastic choice as it is breathable and antimicrobial, becoming softer with each wash.
Layering Your Outfits
When it comes to outerwear, I usually choose between two options: a lightweight jacket from Patagonia or the Ridgelite jacket from The North Face. Both are convenient and easy to pair with inner clothing. I also avoid packing bulky items, opting to wear them during the trip instead.
Choosing Versatile Footwear
Selecting shoes for a trip can be a challenge. I typically go for a simple pair of sneakers that match various outfits, and I also bring along a lightweight backup pair. The On Earth shoes, with their low-profile design, are great for walking on rocky surfaces.
I also make sure to pack a stylish pair of slip-ons and lightweight, waterproof sandals to complete my packing list. The flexibility in shoe choices allows me to move comfortably while still looking fashionable.
