A Flight Attendant's Life

Meet Deeb Haidar, a Brooklyn native who spends half of his time jet-setting around the globe — sometimes across countries! Since becoming a flight attendant three years ago, Deeb has traveled to various corners of the world, from hidden gems to bustling cities, each feeling like a second home.

A Journey to Belonging

Deeb's love for travel started early in life, primarily throughout the Middle East, where he visited Lebanon, Jordan, and Kuwait to connect with family. Growing up in the U.S. with a Middle Eastern background, he often felt out of place, despite his parents’ hopes for him to assimilate. Home felt like a shell that kept him from fully embracing the vibrant world around him.

Favorite Cities

When asked about his early flights, Deeb recalls the challenging domestic routes in and out of Ohio. He was still in the phase of fighting for international flight opportunities. Nowadays, his most frequent destinations are Los Angeles and San Francisco. For Deeb, San Francisco feels the most welcoming, not just for its stunning scenery but for its rich, diverse culture.

Quality of Life

Deeb adores the atmosphere in San Francisco. While it boasts modernity, the city retains much of its traditional charm. He often explores lesser-known areas, seeking out authentic Chinese restaurants and shops that have stood the test of gentrification. These spots are where the Chinese community truly integrates into daily life, beyond the tourist gaze.

Interesting Insights

To discover these hidden gems, Deeb often chats with taxi drivers, whom he considers informal teachers, guiding him to the best local hangouts. While some drivers can be quirky, he finds comfort in conversing with those who have families.

Arrival Rituals

Upon landing in a new city, Deeb has a ritual of freshening up and changing clothes. He then likes to explore areas like Mission or Outer Richmond. Lately, he prefers Outer Richmond for its tranquility, while Mission buzzes with the lively Latin community, offering delicious food and bustling cafes.

Cultural Exploration

Deeb believes in what some call the "tourist mentality" or "theme park mindset," which can hinder genuine exploration. Many visitors to Paris often leave disappointed, feeling disconnected from the city. Sometimes, it’s simply due to a language barrier, and Deeb makes a point to speak French whenever he visits.

Top-Notch Coffee

Paris is one of Deeb's favorite cities, particularly for its charming cafes. One of his go-to spots is a small corner cafe run by an elderly Asian woman, where he claims to have had the best coffee of his life. The atmosphere is familiar and comforting, a stark contrast to the stereotypical Parisian experience.

Life Lessons

Deeb also shares his fondness for a bustling boulangerie called La Griotte in the 17th arrondissement. While it may not serve the best pastries in Paris, the friendly atmosphere and warm welcomes from the locals make it special. Simply attempting to speak French earns you respect here.

Genuine Connections

Deeb is passionate when discussing the people of Paris, urging others to give them a chance. While not everyone in Paris is perfect, he believes that the stigma many Americans hold against them deserves reconsideration. Everyone has a unique story worth listening to.
