Checking In via App: Is It Really Convenient?

Many major hotel chains like Hilton, Hyatt, and Marriott now offer the option to check in through mobile apps. But the real question is: should you use it, and if so, what are the benefits? Honestly, I don’t have a strong opinion on this matter, but a friend asked me about it, so I thought I’d share my perspective.

Hotels Encouraging Mobile Check-In

If you’ve confirmed a reservation with a large hotel chain and have their app, you’ll likely receive a notification inviting you to check in online a few days before your arrival. It’s similar to checking in online with airlines, where most passengers (especially in the U.S.) take advantage of this to get their boarding passes. However, people seem less enthusiastic about checking in at hotels. Why is that?

For many guests, there’s a preference for chatting with the front desk staff to ask about hotel information, inquire about room upgrades, or request late check-outs. The reality is, even when using mobile check-in, you still need to stop by the front desk to show your ID or payment method, or to activate your mobile key.

Mobile Keys: Convenient or Complicated?

Mobile keys are becoming quite popular, allowing you to unlock your room with your smartphone. However, not everyone enjoys using this feature. If you want to enjoy perks for loyal customers, bypassing the front desk might complicate things.

It’s also important to note that not all hotel apps have the same functionalities. For instance, with the Marriott Bonvoy app, you just need to confirm your arrival time and hit the check-in button. Meanwhile, the Hilton Honors app lets you choose a specific room from the available options in your category.

My Experience with Mobile Check-In

I have a fairly casual approach to mobile check-in — sometimes I use it, other times I don’t. To be honest, I can’t recall the last time I used the smartphone room unlock feature. The reasons are unclear, but it just doesn’t appeal to me that much. Maybe I need to get more accustomed to it?

When mobile check-in first rolled out about a decade ago, I tried it a few times and often encountered glitches. Perhaps those experiences have left me feeling lukewarm about it.

When Do I Typically Use Online Check-In?

I usually check in online in the following situations:

  • When I’m satisfied with the room type I booked, which I often see through the app, and there’s a high chance I’ll get an upgrade.
  • When I’m arriving late and want to ensure the hotel doesn’t cancel my reservation or give my room to someone else.
  • When I’m only staying at a limited-service hotel or for a short stay, where upgrades aren’t that important to me.

Even when I use mobile check-in, I still stop by the front desk. However, I find that it often speeds up the check-in process, and my key is usually ready when I show my ID.

When Do I Avoid Online Check-In?

I typically don’t check in online when:

  • The room type I booked shows no signs of an upgrade, and I think I might have a better chance if I check in with the front desk staff.
  • I’m heading to a resort or a luxury hotel, where the check-in experience can be quite beneficial, even enjoyable.

Should You Use Mobile Check-In?

Overall, I wonder if many people share my approach, or if I’m in the minority. I don’t have strong feelings about this topic, even though mobile check-in has never made me feel like I’m saving much time, unlike when I fly. Maybe I’m just stuck in my old habits.

Conclusion

We’re all used to checking in online for flights. While most major hotel chains offer this feature, the benefits can vary. Personally, I occasionally use mobile check-in, but even then, I find myself questioning its necessity. If I’m hoping for an upgrade beyond what the hotel app suggests, I usually wait until I arrive to check in. How about you? Do you enjoy using app check-in?
