While waiting for my flight from Charlotte, a pilot found himself stuck in line at Starbucks, causing a delay. This funny situation sparked a conversation about the coffee quality at American Airlines.
Flight from Charlotte to Liberia
As I awaited my flight from Charlotte to Liberia, Costa Rica, a rather amusing situation unfolded. The flight was delayed because the pilot was stuck in line at the nearby Starbucks. Passengers around me began to murmur, questioning how a flight could be grounded for such a trivial reason.
A Few Minutes of Waiting
We heard announcements calling for Captain DeWalt. After about 5 to 10 minutes, they called his name again. People started to grumble, feeling that it was a quintessentially American moment for an entire flight to be held up over a cup of coffee.
Meeting Captain DeWalt
On my way back from the restroom, I unexpectedly walked past Captain DeWalt. It was clear he was late because he had been waiting in line at Starbucks. When he finally arrived at the gate, both he and the gate staff were chuckling, but I couldn't help but wonder if there was any respect for the passengers when an entire plane of people had to wait just for the pilot to grab a coffee.
The Coffee Dilemma at American Airlines
I didn’t hold it against the pilot; rather, I felt dissatisfied with American Airlines. There’s something off about a pilot having to venture out for coffee. Surely, the cost of providing coffee isn’t a major financial burden for the airline, yet it affects the customer experience dramatically.
Why Coffee Quality Matters
Good coffee not only boosts operational efficiency but also minimizes delays, as pilots wouldn’t need to stop at airport cafes. The quality of coffee also impacts employee morale, which in turn affects customer service. A great cup of coffee can make flight attendants feel prouder and decrease complaints from passengers.

Enter Lavazza
The decision by American Airlines to switch to Lavazza was highly anticipated. I had previously written about the need for the airline to elevate its coffee quality, and they finally announced they would be introducing Lavazza. Starting in February, Lavazza has begun to appear in American Airlines lounges.
Cost of Coffee and Quality Signals
While coffee is a minor expense compared to the airline's revenue, it plays an important role in signaling quality. If pilots and staff don’t have to stop for coffee, then flight delays could become a thing of the past. In 2015, I estimated that American Airlines' coffee expense was around $5-10 million annually.
Big Changes Are Coming
As of now, switching to Lavazza may not significantly reduce that figure but will certainly not lead to major changes. Upgrading coffee quality not only helps the airline become more reliable but also enhances its brand image.
The Lavazza Brand Value
Lavazza offers not only quality coffee but also a sense of luxury for customers. With each cup of coffee, American Airlines is not just buying coffee; they are investing in a better service experience.
This story truly reflects an interesting issue in the airline industry. Paying attention to details like coffee can indeed make a significant difference in the passenger experience.
