My flight from Bali to Doha brought unexpected surprises during my brief 24-hour stay. Join me as I share this adventure!

Starting the Journey from Bali to Doha

I began my flight from Bali (DPS) to Doha (DOH) with plans to stay there for 48 to 72 hours. I needed some time to rest due to health issues, and I had a connecting flight to London (LHR) with British Airways. However, that ticket was canceled because BA stopped operating that route.

British Airways agreed to rebook my flight with another airline (possibly Qatar Airways), but before they could do that, I wanted to ensure I could actually enter Doha. When I arrived at the check-in counter in Bali, the staff called a manager over and informed me that I could not board the flight because I didn’t have a subsequent ticket from Doha.

The Battle with Check-in Requirements

I suggested buying a new ticket on the spot, and they agreed, but they stipulated that I would be treated as a transit passenger and could only stay in Doha for a maximum of 24 hours. They also informed me that my luggage would be checked through to London. I mentioned that I held a British passport, which allows me to stay longer, but they didn’t seem to care.

I even explained that I had liquid medication that I couldn’t take through security in Bali, but they were indifferent. It felt incredibly unfair, but I had to nod and accept.

Meeting the Cabin Crew

Once on the plane, I shared my situation with the cabin crew, and they were just as surprised; they hadn’t heard anything about the 24-hour requirement. Upon arriving in Doha, I was fortunate to meet the Chief Steward, who introduced me to the ground team.

They suggested I head to the baggage claim to see if I could retrieve my luggage, as it contained my medication. When I arrived at the counter, they informed me a security officer would accompany me to retrieve my medicine from my suitcase. However, I wanted to collect my entire luggage since I needed other items like clothes.

The Trouble at the Baggage Counter

They told me I needed to go to the baggage counter in the immigration area but that there would be a fee for retrieving my luggage. When I inquired about the cost, they said they didn’t know because the prices changed frequently. How strange! I then passed through immigration and entered the baggage claim area.

At the baggage counter, they mentioned the process could take "up to 2 hours" and that there would be a fee to retrieve my luggage. I agreed and waited. Eventually, they 'opened' two ticket codes and said there would be no fee.

Leaving Doha Without a Hitch

I had to sign a form stating that there was no fee for this service. So why did the reception and the baggage counter initially inform me about a fee to guide passengers? After about an hour of waiting, I finally retrieved my luggage without any issues.

After checking the UK Government website, I found no information about a 24-hour regulation. In the end, I stayed in Doha for 48 hours as I had originally planned, and I faced no problems when departing to London (LHR) after rebooking my ticket with Qatar Airways.

Was It the Right Decision?

I felt I made the right choice by staying in Doha longer than expected. I had canceled my flight from Doha to London that I booked in Bali within 24 hours to get a refund.
