Campbell Wilson, the CEO of Air India, has announced his resignation after four years of leadership filled with challenges. Who will take on this pivotal role next?

Shifts in Power Within India's Aviation Industry

The Indian aviation sector is currently undergoing significant changes. Recently, Pieter Elbers, the CEO of IndiGo, announced his resignation, and now the latest news reveals that Campbell Wilson, the CEO of Air India, will also be stepping down from his position.

Campbell Wilson's Tenure at Air India

Air India has confirmed Campbell Wilson's resignation and has established a committee to find his successor in the coming months. According to the airline, Wilson had been planning to leave this role for some time: “Wilson informed Air India Chairman N. Chandrasekaran of his intention to resign in 2026 back in 2024, and since then, he has been working to ensure organizational and leadership stability for a smooth transition. He will continue in his role until a successor is announced and officially takes office.”

The Story of a CEO with Ups and Downs

At 55 years old, Wilson hails from New Zealand and became the CEO of Air India in June 2022. Prior to joining Air India, he had a long tenure at Singapore Airlines since 1996 and was the founding CEO of Scoot, Singapore Airlines' low-cost carrier, established in 2011.

Wilson's leadership at Air India has been marked by both highlights and challenges. Unlike Pieter Elbers, whose resignation seemed forced due to the airline's operational difficulties, Wilson's departure has been on the cards for years, making it less of a surprise.

Wilson's Legacy at Air India

I have mixed feelings about Wilson's time as CEO at Air India. On the positive side, he has helped the airline find a new direction, with many changes taking place under his leadership. However, in terms of passenger experience and profitability, Air India still has a long way to go.

In terms of passenger experience, the airline has made significant improvements in its narrow-body fleet, but upgrades to its long-haul products have taken much longer than expected. Currently, Air India operates only one Dreamliner, and the long-haul seating options are not yet up to par.

Challenges Facing Air India

While the aviation industry has faced various supply chain issues for an extended period, the delays in enhancing Air India’s long-haul products after Wilson's four years of leadership have been particularly disappointing. Additionally, Air India has encountered numerous serious challenges over the past year, from navigating airspace closures to the accident involving flight AI171. Although these issues are not Wilson's fault, the airline recorded a massive loss last year, one of the largest in its history, which does not bode well for a recovery following privatization.

Who Will Succeed Wilson?

It’s intriguing to consider who will take Wilson's place. In the case of IndiGo, former IAG CEO Willie Walsh was appointed as the new CEO. Who will Air India choose to lead in the future? It seems likely they will opt for an Indian candidate, but I'm not sure who would be the right fit. If they decide to go with another foreigner, perhaps former American Airlines CEO Doug Parker might be available. Or could it be former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce?

Looking Ahead for Air India

Ultimately, Campbell Wilson's resignation comes about four years after he initiated the restructuring plan for India's national airline. While Air India is on the right track, the transformation has not yet met expectations after four years, and the airline continues to face significant hurdles. Witnessing the departure of CEOs from two of India's largest airlines in quick succession is quite remarkable, and I’m curious to see if Air India will choose a former CEO from another major airline. What are your thoughts on Wilson's resignation, and who do you think will succeed him?
