Recently, I had the pleasure of chatting with Josh Simonetti, the casino manager on the Crystal Serenity cruise ship. He has spent many years at sea, and each day is an exciting journey that few people truly understand.

Josh began his career in a casino in Philadelphia after Pennsylvania legalized card games. Since then, he joined Crystal Cruises in 2014, embarking on his first trip to Reykjavík just before his 26th birthday. In just six months, Josh had visited around 43 different countries.

A Day in the Life

As a casino manager, Josh faces numerous challenges. Whenever the ship sets sail, they must prepare for a bustling night ahead. The casino opens at 7 PM, and the time leading up to that is spent dining and getting ready for work.

"Sea days are quite different," Josh shares. "We start the slot machines at 10 AM and begin table games around 1 PM." The excitement continues until guests are ready for dinner, at which point the team takes a break to recharge.

Memorable Moments

Josh feels a sense of joy when he encounters familiar guests. They remember his name, and he remembers theirs. Some passengers travel together for months, creating a sense of community and connection.

However, life at sea isn’t always easy. Josh reveals the pangs of homesickness and missing traditional gatherings with friends. "Sometimes I can’t make it home for holidays, and that’s tough. Friends plan trips, but I can’t join," he confides.

Reflections on Life at Sea

Living on a ship offers exciting experiences, but it also comes with its quirks. Josh admits that finding free time can be a challenge, as he is an active person. "It feels strange not being able to jump in a car and go somewhere," he says.

Additionally, not being able to follow his favorite sports leaves Josh feeling a bit deprived. "I love watching soccer matches with friends, but when I’m at sea, that’s really hard," he notes.

Favorite Destinations

Iceland was Josh's first port of call and holds a special place in his heart. However, Geiranger, a small town in Norway, is his absolute favorite. "The scenery is breathtaking. The towering mountains and waterfalls make me feel like I’m in a fairy tale," Josh shares.

Josh is also an avid golfer. He has played in various locations, from Ushuaia, Argentina, to Dubai. "I always bring my golf clubs and try to play whenever I can," he says.

Life on Board

When he’s not working, Josh still finds ways to enjoy himself. "If there’s a game on, I’ll stay in my room. But if not, I like to eat in the crew lounge. It’s a great place to meet people from different departments and share stories," he explains.

Evenings on the cruise ship are lively with activities like movie nights, karaoke, and themed parties. "We host Olympics for the crew, and I give it my all in the sports," Josh laughs as he recalls winning a bronze medal in a basketball game.

Meaningful Memories

One memory that Josh cherishes deeply is of a special guest. "There was a customer, a man with multiple sclerosis. He came to the casino with friends every night to play blackjack. One day, he asked if he could join us for golf. That experience made him feel like he was reliving his favorite days," he remembers.

"This made me realize that every moment is precious; who knows when it might be the last. That’s why I treasure these experiences so much," Josh reflects.

Tips for First-Time Cruisers

For those embarking on their first cruise, Josh has a simple tip: "Be prepared and plan what you want to do. Don’t miss out on opportunities just because you weren’t ready," he advises.

"If you’re flying a long distance, arrive a day or two early to adjust and prepare for your journey," Josh emphasizes. Life at sea truly is an unforgettable adventure.
