The Journey of Hachiko

In Japan, the story of a dog named Hachiko has become legendary. During the 1920s, Hachiko would accompany his owner to Shibuya Station each morning and return in the afternoon to wait for him after work. This loyal dog repeated this ritual for nearly two years, until one fateful day when his owner did not return due to a sudden stroke. Despite this, Hachiko continued to wait. For almost ten years, he held onto hope and loyalty, returning to the station every afternoon to wait for his beloved owner. This touching tale captured the hearts of the Japanese people.

News of Hachiko’s unwavering loyalty spread, and more and more people flocked to Shibuya Station to meet him. In his memory, a statue was erected at the station, and April 8th is now celebrated as 'Hachiko Day.' Hachiko is not just a heartwarming story but a symbol of loyalty in Japanese culture, demonstrating the deep bond between humans and dogs that dates back to ancient times, supported by archaeological discoveries of dog burials.

Rescue Dogs in Japan

Thanks to this love and loyalty, the Japan Rescue Association (JRA) was established to train rescue dogs to assist in emergencies. In 1995, the devastating Hanshin earthquake, measuring 6.9, resulted in over 6,400 fatalities and tens of thousands of injuries. In the aftermath of this disaster, Japan realized it lacked adequate rescue infrastructure with trained dogs. While countries like the United States and Switzerland had established rescue dog teams, Japan had only a handful of trained canines.

Dogs can search more quickly than humans in disaster-stricken areas, aiding in the detection of survivors among the rubble. Following the disaster, the JRA was formed to train rescue and therapy dogs. Naoto Matsuzaki, the vice president and one of the founders of JRA, stated, “I believe that if rescue dogs had been available then, many lives could have been saved.” His organization not only helps people but also focuses on healing those affected by disasters.

JRA's Activities

Since its establishment in 1995, JRA has participated in some of the worst natural disasters in Japan, including the Kyotango landslide in 2006 and the Kumamoto earthquake in 2016. Currently, they have four active rescue dogs in disaster areas and seven more in training. JRA operates not only domestically but also sends dogs to neighboring countries to assist in disasters, such as the earthquakes in Turkey in 1999, India in 2001, and Nepal in 2015.

This organization has built training facilities to simulate real disaster areas, ensuring that dogs are always prepared to respond. They not only focus on rescue but also have a healing function, with a therapy dog training program that aids patients in hospitals, nursing homes, and schools, providing comfort to disaster victims.

A Journey for Travel Enthusiasts

Travelers joining tours to Japan organized by Intrepid often visit the Hachiko statue at Shibuya Station and hear the story of this devoted dog from their guides. Hachiko’s story has touched many hearts, inspiring them to contribute to JRA. As of September 2024, over 25,000 AUD has been donated through the Intrepid Foundation to support JRA. One contributor shared that they donated 'for all the Hachikos in the world, those who love and support the people who need help the most.'

The Significance of Loyalty

After many years of steadfast loyalty, Hachiko and the rescue dogs of JRA are not just companions but symbols of loyalty in Japanese culture. These stories remind us of the power of love and support during difficult times. Remember that every journey, every trip you take, not only enriches your own experience but can also help others, just as Hachiko did.
