Don't miss your chance to convert Citi points to hotel rewards before April 19. Act now to avoid losing 50% of their value.

Don't Miss Out on This Opportunity

If you're planning to use your Citi points for hotel bookings, now is the time to act! Starting April 19, the Citi ThankYou Rewards program will undergo changes that will decrease the value of point transfers to hotel partners.

Specifically, the conversion rate to the Choice Privileges program will drop by 25%, while transfers to I Prefer Hotel Rewards could see a reduction of up to 50%. This means you'll miss out on a significant opportunity if you don't utilize your points during this period.

Reduced Value for Choice Privileges Transfers

Currently, the conversion rate from ThankYou Rewards points to Choice Privileges is 1:2 (meaning 1,000 Citi points equal 2,000 Choice points). However, starting April 19, this will change to 1,500 Choice points for every 1,000 ThankYou Rewards points, effectively giving you only 1.5 Choice points for each Citi point—a 25% drop in value.

This means that if you previously could book a night at a hotel in Japan for 8,000 Choice points, you will now need at least 12,000 points. If you have plans to travel to Japan or other locations with Choice hotels, be sure to book your stay now to avoid losing this great opportunity.

Reduced Value for I Prefer Hotel Rewards Transfers

For the I Prefer Hotel Rewards program, the current rate is 1,000 Citi points for 4,000 I Prefer points. However, after the adjustment on April 19, this rate will drop to 2,000 I Prefer points for every 1,000 ThankYou Rewards points. This could deter many from booking luxury hotels.

For example, a hotel that you could book for 25,000 Citi points will now require 50,000 points. This is indeed a significant change, but there are still hotels with room rates over $1,000, making the expenditure of 50,000 points potentially worthwhile.

Tips for Maximizing Your Points

While it’s important not to convert points blindly, if you find a hotel that fits your travel plans, check room availability and convert your points before the April 19 deadline. This will help you take advantage of the higher current conversion rates.

Other programs like Capital One miles and American Express Membership Rewards also allow transfers to Choice Privileges at a 1:1 ratio, so you'll still get better value by converting from Citi points.

Conclusion

This reduction in value is indeed unfortunate in the process of earning and redeeming points. Hotel and airline programs frequently adjust their redemption rates, making some opportunities more limited. Therefore, it’s best to hold onto your points within the program until you have a specific use in mind.

With the conversion rates between credit programs being affected, booking at Choice and Preferred hotels before April 19 is a smart choice to preserve the value of your points.
