Monthly Flights from Nigeria to the Caribbean: From Challenge to Feasibility?
Nigeria's Air Peace airline is set to resume its monthly flights from Lagos to Antigua and Barbados starting May 24, utilizing Boeing 777 aircraft. This announcement has stirred controversy, particularly with critic Sean Mendis questioning the viability of this service to the extent that Air Peace threatened legal action against him.
Mixed Opinions
Sean Mendis, who I've known for over 20 years since our days co-managing the Delta Air Lines forum on FlyerTalk, expressed on LinkedIn that "a monthly service does not support any form of travel or commercial connection, unless it’s human trafficking." However, Air Peace argues that this new service is justified based on previous unofficial charter flights to Antigua and Barbuda in 2023 and a notable charter from Lagos to Montego Bay, Jamaica in 2020.
Operational Challenges
Having only one 'noteworthy' flight in the past six years does not guarantee sustainable growth. Moreover, air traffic exchange between West Africa and the Caribbean is very limited. Daily flights or even just Saturday services could lead to significant financial losses for the airline. This means fewer flights might help mitigate those losses.

Factors to Consider
The monthly service struggles to accommodate round trips, vacations, business trips, emergencies, or any other travel needs. It works only for passengers who can depart or return on the specified dates, forcing them to fly with another airline for the remaining leg of their journey. This results in lost fare benefits from the round trip.
Pricing and Costs
A Boeing 777 is simply too large for this demand. Fixed costs cannot be spread across a small number of passengers and flights. Even with many airport functions outsourced, there are still management, sales and distribution processes, contract handling, coordination with airports and governments, food provision, security, local oversight, baggage and cargo handling, incident response planning, and customer support to consider.
Emerging Issues
What happens in the event of an irregular occurrence? A flight diversion or cancellation? It appears that on one occasion, Air Peace sold tickets to Jamaica but changed the destination to Barbados without refunding passengers who couldn't make the trip, only issuing refunds after pressure from regulatory authorities.
Examples of Monthly Services
I searched for other examples of monthly services for long-haul flights, and the closest I found was the St Helena – Ascension route. This charter flight is funded by users on Ascension Island, prioritizing bookings for their staff, with remaining seats sold to the public. The island is located 960 miles off the African coast and 1,400 miles from South America, with no native or permanent residents.
Operational Limitations
Currently, Air Peace operates Boeing 737 and 777 aircraft, as well as Embraer regional planes, totaling 29 aircraft in its fleet. Their Boeing 777s are primarily sourced from airlines like Emirates, Singapore, and Japan Airlines. Eight years ago, they planned to fly to Houston, but that never materialized. In 2022, they formed an alliance with other airlines in Nigeria to seek official approval for collusion and pricing.
