American Airlines is set to restart flights to Venezuela at the end of April, marking the airline's return to this market after several years.

American Airlines Returns to Venezuela

At the end of April, American Airlines is preparing to make its return to Venezuela. The airline, based in Fort Worth, Texas, has announced plans to resume flights to Simón Bolívar International Airport (CCS) near Caracas, with operations expected to begin on April 30.

The airline will operate daily flights from Miami International Airport (MIA) using the Embraer E175, which has a seating capacity of 76. Currently, ticket sales for flights to CCS have not yet commenced.

First Non-Stop Service Since 2019

The service from MIA to CCS will be the first non-stop flights between the United States and Venezuela since 2019. Data from aviation analytics company Cirium indicates that service between MIA and CCS, along with La Chinita International Airport (MAR) near Maracaibo, was halted in April of that year. Flights from Venezuelan airlines like Avior Airlines and Estelar also ceased operations a month later.

Leadership Changes in Venezuela

The resumption of non-stop flights between the U.S. and Venezuela comes on the heels of leadership changes in Venezuela, following the U.S. removal and arrest of former president Nicolás Maduro in January. The U.S. has announced that it will be the first airline to resume non-stop flights between the two countries.

Other Airlines Expanding Services

In addition to American Airlines, two airlines in the Star Alliance—Avianca (Colombia) and Copa Airlines (Panama)—are also increasing their services to Venezuela following the leadership changes. Avianca is now operating two daily flights from El Dorado International Airport (BOG) in Bogotá to CCS, up from a few times a week previously, while Copa has resumed flights to three other secondary cities in Venezuela in addition to CCS from Tocumen International Airport (PTY) in Panama City.
