Changes to ThankYou Points Conversion for Hotels
If you hold a Citi Strata Premier card and frequently convert your ThankYou points to hotel programs, there's some disappointing news on the horizon. Citi has announced a reduction in the value of converting ThankYou points to the Choice Privileges and I Prefer programs, effective April 19, 2026. This update was communicated via an email, but the reality is clear: you will receive fewer hotel points for the same amount of Citi points.
Your points will be worth less tomorrow than they are today. This change primarily impacts those who strategically use their points by converting them, rather than saving them for vague future uses.
Specific Changes Ahead
Currently, Citi offers a fairly attractive conversion rate to these two hotel programs, which is significant considering the rising costs of hotel point redemptions. As of now, before April 18, 2026, you can convert:
- 1,000 ThankYou points → 2,000 Choice Privileges® points
- 1,000 ThankYou points → 4,000 I Prefer points
However, starting April 19, these rates will drop significantly:
- 1,000 ThankYou points → 1,500 Choice Privileges® points
- 1,000 ThankYou points → 2,000 I Prefer points
This translates to a 25% reduction in value for Choice and a 50% reduction for I Prefer. There’s no added flexibility, no new partners—just a straightforward decrease in the value of your ThankYou points.
Is Converting Points to Hotels Smart?
I’ve always believed that converting points to hotel stays isn’t the best use of your rewards. However, there are certain situations where it still makes sense. Personally, I find that using 80,000 to 100,000 points for a one-way business class ticket, which can easily exceed $3,000, is a more reasonable choice.
That said, hotel prices have skyrocketed post-pandemic. For some travelers, using points for hotel stays remains their preferred way to enjoy life. Choice points can hold significant value in specific markets:
✈️ Tìm chuyến bay giá tốt
Đặt vé ngay với giá ưu đãi từ các hãng hàng không
- Premium resorts in Nordic countries and Japan under the Ascend and Preferred brands.
- Seasonal European hotels where cash rates soar above $500, especially in the summer.
- Many independent hotels that offer more reasonable rates without the dynamic pricing of chains like Hilton or Marriott.
The Issue of Diminishing Point Value
Until now, the 2:1 conversion rate to Choice has made these transactions appealing. However, cutting this down to 1.5:1 has greatly diminished its value, especially when competitors like Chase and Amex have already assessed lower values for hotel point conversions. The reduction in value for I Prefer is even harder to justify.
While I Prefer does have specific appeal (mainly high-end resorts and boutique hotels), slashing the conversion value in half renders it a program to be used only in emergencies.
Widespread Devaluation of Points
We've seen this trend in hotel and airline programs, but now banks are also diminishing the value of reward points. As more people utilize their rewards, those points become a liability for banks. Everyone has a value for redeeming points, akin to the paid time off that an employer must account for.
When too many points flood the market, making them less valuable helps reduce risk for banks. Ultimately, this move reflects a broader trend in the industry. Banks are continually tightening the generosity of reward programs through "adjustments" rather than clear announcements.
What You Should Do Now
If you plan to convert your ThankYou points to Choice Privileges or I Prefer, it's wise to act before April 18, 2026. If you don’t intend to use them immediately, proceed with caution. Hotel programs are notorious for decreasing the value of their points, and unplanned conversions often aren’t the smartest choice.
However, if you do plan to redeem points soon, especially with Choice, locking in the current 2:1 rate will still provide good value.
Conclusion
This may seem like a minor change, but it's part of a larger pattern that travelers should pay attention to. Points are not a savings account; they are a currency that is continuously depreciating, and banks have every incentive to reduce their liabilities over time. For Citi cardholders, this serves as a reminder that flexibility, rather than loyalty, is the true value of transferable points.
Use your points wisely, stay alert for devaluations, and don’t assume that today’s “deal” will still be available tomorrow. Citi is reducing the value of converting ThankYou points to Choice Privileges and I Prefer starting April 18. Make sure to use your points smartly today.
