A Dilemma When Planning a Trip

This month, I’ve been planning a trip to Thailand, something I had set in motion long before tensions rose in the Middle East. However, I still haven’t booked my flight, which is pretty typical for me as I tend to wait until the last minute to find the best reward ticket options.

Flying from Miami, where there are no direct flights to Asia, I thought my best chance of using miles would be to snag a last-minute ticket on a Gulf airline. But the uncertainty stemming from the current conflict has made everything more complicated.

Choosing Your Itinerary

I discovered that Qatar Airways has opened up business class seats with low mileage requirements for a route with a perfect stopover. This put me in a bit of a quandary: should I book this flight? Or should I wait for another route that might not be as convenient?

Should I go ahead and book this itinerary, hoping the situation won’t deteriorate before my flight? Or is it better to just secure the ticket and, if conditions worsen, cancel for a small fee?

Reasons to Fly with Gulf Airlines

Despite the risks from the ongoing conflict, flying with Gulf airlines right now has its advantages. Flights are generally less crowded, and the chances of finding reward tickets are quite favorable. Airlines like Emirates and Qatar Airways often have a high volume of passengers between various countries, and once these options disappear, finding seats through other regions can become much more challenging.

Additionally, I’ve mentioned before that I don’t worry too much about the risks of flying. In fact, I often find driving to be potentially more dangerous than getting on a plane. However, I don’t mean to downplay any risks; I just want to point out that the actual risks of flying compared to driving are hard to compare accurately.

Risks of Flying with Gulf Airlines

On the flip side, there are valid concerns when it comes to flying with Gulf airlines. Safety risks are heightened, and you could find yourself stranded if the situation worsens. Furthermore, Gulf countries don’t always provide accurate information about the domestic situation, which can make some travelers uneasy.

One reason I hesitate is that I don’t want to cause my loved ones to worry knowing I’m flying through this region. Adding unnecessary stress for my family is something I’d like to avoid.

Drawbacks of Flying with Gulf Airlines

Many people also point out that some insurance policies may not be valid if you’re in a conflict zone, so it’s up to each individual to decide how important that factor is to them.

Right now, the situation is indeed challenging for the major airlines in the Gulf. It’s understandable why many would want to steer clear of these carriers at this time—the combination of safety concerns and the potential for incidents during flights leaves many feeling uneasy.

Conclusion

As a member of the OMAAT community, I’m eager to hear whether others feel comfortable flying through Gulf hubs. Does your perception of flying through Dubai or Doha differ? If you’re not comfortable with it, what would make you willing to fly that route again? Please share your thoughts!
