Spirit Airlines is on the brink of bankruptcy after the government blocked its merger with JetBlue. Should the government intervene to rescue this airline?

Spirit Airlines and the Need for Rescue

Facing severe financial difficulties, Spirit Airlines is teetering on the edge of closure as the U.S. government intervened to block its merger with JetBlue. This situation raises questions not just about Spirit's survival, but also about the ethical implications of government intervention in the market.

Spirit has attracted attention from major players like Frontier and JetBlue. Ultimately, JetBlue offered $33.50 per share, amounting to a $3.8 billion deal that Spirit's shareholders approved in October 2022. However, the government's intervention has stalled this plan.

Government Intervention: Unforeseen Consequences

In March 2023, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit arguing that Spirit is not just any airline, but the largest and fastest-growing low-cost carrier in the country. They stated that Spirit's existence is crucial for the entire aviation market, as the "Spirit Effect" has contributed to lower fares for passengers.

However, if the government deems Spirit too vital to fail, it must also accept responsibility should the airline fall into crisis. By January 2024, a federal judge blocked the merger with JetBlue, and at that point, Spirit had to file for bankruptcy after failing to improve its financial situation.

The Cost of Rescue: Reasonable Yet Controversial

The U.S. government has previously intervened in the auto industry with successful outcomes. Statistics show that through the auto bailout program, the government invested around $80 billion and saved approximately 1.5 million jobs. While Spirit is smaller, the rationale for rescuing it is similar. With an investment of $500 million, the government wouldn't just be buying a symbolic project; it would also acquire valuable assets like planes, routes, and competitive opportunities in the market.

The Demand for Low-Cost Air Travel in the U.S.

This begs the question: why is it so challenging to sustain low-cost air travel in the U.S. while many other regions excel at it? Europe and Asia boast numerous successful low-cost airlines; why can't the U.S., one of the wealthiest nations in the world, achieve the same?

Additionally, the U.S. government has invested in national passenger transport systems through Amtrak but does not recognize low-cost air travel as an essential service. Despite its shortcomings, Spirit provides a quick transportation solution at low prices that Amtrak cannot match.

The Value of Spirit Airlines

Spirit leases its aircraft, but it's undeniable that these assets are in high demand. Gates at Chicago O'Hare and other airports are also valuable. We must not overlook that the workforce, including pilots and technicians, is an invaluable asset as well. While Spirit's value may be higher in auctions, the real question is: what is the true worth of this airline?

Conclusion: A Necessary Lesson for the Government

I do not advocate for government intervention in the market; however, in Spirit's case, the government has intervened and must take responsibility for the outcomes. Having declared that Spirit is too important to fail, the government cannot stand by when this airline faces challenges. Allowing Spirit and JetBlue to merge could have saved thousands of jobs and minimized negative impacts on consumers.

To protect consumer interests, the government needs to reassess its policies and not obstruct companies seeking a path to survival. Otherwise, the adverse effects on the aviation industry will linger for a long time.
