If you're in search of a simple yet flavorful bowl of Cantonese porridge, Botak Cantonese Porridge is the perfect choice. Let's dive into this dish that has captured my heart!

A Warm Start to Porridge Delight

With the chilly weather, I always crave warm dishes, especially porridge. As I arrived at Our Tampines Hub and noticed the heavy rain, my appetite surged. My target was Botak Cantonese Porridge, previously known as Botak Delicacy. This family-run eatery specializes in Cantonese-style porridge, with the main branch in Tampines and additional outlets in Punggol and Bedok.

The Tampines location is run by a friendly trio — two ladies and a gentleman. I was particularly impressed by the head cook, whose swift knife skills ensured that three pots of porridge were always bubbling away. Despite the steady stream of customers, the place never felt cramped, and orders were processed quickly. It was a pity that the founder wasn’t present; I would have loved to meet “Botak,” the character behind the restaurant's name.

Enjoying Elegant Porridge

When it came to ordering my Cantonese porridge, I immediately opted for the Egg and Minced Pork Porridge (S$4). I’ve never understood why some people dislike century eggs; to me, they are incredibly delicious. In this dish, the century egg pieces have a jelly-like texture. Interestingly, when tasted alone, they have a rich flavor, but when mixed with the porridge, they create a creamy, harmonious spoonful.

I also added an egg (S$0.60) on top of my steaming bowl of porridge. Mixing everything together, the egg enhanced the richness of the dish. Topped with crispy shallots and bean sprouts, this simple porridge was truly delightful. However, I did have a bit of trouble spotting the minced pork in my bowl, despite it being one of the main components. Yet, as I dug in, I found generous pieces of succulent pork fat.

A Unique Flavor Combination

There was a hint of ginger in the porridge, which made me a little apprehensive since I'm not a fan of ginger. I usually only tolerate it when drinking tea with honey. Now, I can add this porridge to my list of dishes I can endure. Speaking of toppings, the fried dough sticks sank into the porridge after mixing. Surprisingly, each spoonful still retained their crunch. I had expected them to become soggy, but they were fantastic!

Still a bit hungry, I decided to order the Mixed Porridge (S$4.80). This is the easiest way to sample nearly all the offerings from Botak Cantonese Porridge. Skipping the fried dough sticks, century eggs, and minced pork since I had already mentioned them, let's dive into the squid. I found four slices of squid, but they felt like the weakest component, lacking distinct flavor in the bowl. At least they weren't overly chewy and were easy to cut, offering a delightful crunch when bitten into.

Exploring Meaty Flavors

Upon spotting two slices of tripe, I felt a bit anxious. I’m not a huge fan of this dish. While I don’t despise ginger, I wouldn’t choose tripe if given the option. Unfortunately, I was rewarded with a rather chewy piece of meat. The dish also included shredded chicken and pork, along with a meatball. Among the three types, the meatball stood out the most. Handcrafted, it didn’t have that frozen meat taste and was a delightful blend of fatty and lean meat. I just wish they offered more than one meatball.

Final Thoughts

If I weren't alone, I would definitely have ordered a bowl of sliced fish porridge (S$5.30) or seafood porridge (S$6.50) to try as well. But with what Botak Cantonese Porridge offers, I will surely return. Although I really enjoyed Botak porridge, it’s important to manage your expectations. Each bowl is hearty and large but doesn’t come with a lot of ingredients, some of which are homemade. They are also very budget-friendly, with most dishes priced under S$5. Even with dark soy sauce on hand, I never felt the need to use it. All the dishes were rich in natural flavors. Still, this is a simple bowl of porridge, nothing extravagant. If you’re looking for a straightforward yet delicious Cantonese porridge, I wholeheartedly recommend Botak Cantonese Porridge for your culinary adventure.
