Having trouble with your American Airlines ticket? Here's my story on how to handle unexpected schedule changes.
My American Airlines Flight Saga
Recently, I found myself in a somewhat comical yet frustrating situation with my American Airlines ticket. I had booked a flight from Denver (DEN) to Mexico City (MEX) with a layover in Dallas (DFW), but suddenly, my plans were turned upside down.
Last Wednesday, my flight from DEN to DFW was delayed for an extended period, with the risk of cancellation looming over me. There was no way I could make it to Mexico City that day or even by the end of Thursday. Ultimately, I decided to request a ticket change back to New York, where I live. Consequently, my flight was rerouted to DEN-ORD-LGA.
Challenges in Rescheduling
American Airlines informed me that they could arrange a later flight to Mexico City, but they couldn't book me on any flights outside the next 24 hours. However, I had planned to leave Mexico City on Friday and return to New York. I needed to be in New York between Monday and Wednesday this week, so staying in Mexico City beforehand wasn't really feasible.

The situation became more complicated when I discovered that American Airlines had added a JFK-MEX flight to my booking reference (PNR), despite their insistence that they couldn't do so after several exchanges. This flight still appeared in the app, complete with a seat number, but I was concerned that my actual electronic ticket didn't match this flight.
Understanding Flight Ticket Mechanics
The actual status of my electronic ticket showed that only the flights from Denver to Dallas and from Dallas to Mexico City were still open. This meant that my current ticket did not support the JFK-MEX flight that the app was displaying. Meanwhile, my conversations with airline staff were also unclear. One representative told me to wait until the displayed coupons were used, while another suggested that the interrupted ticket had no value after my rerouting back to New York.
Questions That Need Answers
Amidst the conflicting information, I have a few questions that I hope others can help with based on their experiences.
- 1. Has anyone ever encountered a situation where American Airlines left a "ghost leg" in the system like this, showing a flight in the app without a valid ticket?
- 2. If I arrive at the airport with this status, what usually happens? Is the check-in process often a failure? Can airport staff assist me in resolving this, or is this a common last-minute issue?
- 3. In this particular case, is there any way for AA to honor the transport to the original destination (MEX) after changing my ticket back to NYC?
Currently, I still have a round-trip ticket issued by AA with the next leg to MEX, so getting to Mexico City remains very important. However, my biggest concern is the ticket handling mechanism of American Airlines and the mismatch between the booking reference and the actual coupon status. I would greatly appreciate any advice from those who have faced a similar situation.
