Experience at the Delta One Lounge

Delta Air Lines has created a luxurious ground service product in the U.S. with its Delta One lounges. However, some recent changes at their JFK lounge have disrupted the experience unnecessarily, leaving me feeling a bit frustrated.

Luggage Issues

At the Delta One lounge in JFK, passengers are now required to leave large luggage outside the dining area before they can sit down. They also encourage guests to tip when purchasing upgraded drinks (using either cash or SkyMiles). This new luggage policy came as quite a surprise. Having to check my bags before dinner felt really off.

Not long ago, there was a serious incident at the lounge that they want to avoid repeating. Does anyone know what happened with the luggage? Was someone transporting exotic animals or children? In reality, it could have just been a lost knife or another security issue. Airport regulations regarding knives are quite strict, and lounge kitchens are regularly inspected. If something goes missing, I understand why Delta would need to act swiftly.

Another less appealing possibility is that passengers are stealing cutlery or utensils. This isn’t the first time items have disappeared from the lounge, so this policy feels like a reactive measure, and I hope it's only temporary. Overall, while this policy addresses a problem, it detracts from the luxurious experience that Delta aims to provide.

The Tipping Dilemma

However, what bothers me even more is the tipping situation. Now, if you use SkyMiles to upgrade a drink, they present you with a tipping screen, which makes me uncomfortable. This is something new that they never had before. I tipped 2,500 miles and then felt a bit awkward about it.

It’s perfectly normal to leave a voluntary tip for excellent service. But being prompted to tip, especially with miles, after spending thousands on a premium ticket feels different. This isn’t a casual restaurant. This is a high-end experience that Delta is promoting as part of the ticket… and these staff members are already being paid a fair wage.

Frankly, this is unacceptable. Airlines are currently experimenting with how far they can push ancillary revenue and shift costs to customers, even in their most luxurious spaces. Delta is about to sell “basic” global business class, so the “segregation” of the lounge experience isn’t surprising.

Conclusion

The luggage policy is understandable for legitimate safety reasons. But the tipping issue is entirely unreasonable. Delta has spent years building a luxury brand that passengers trust. A brand cannot strengthen when it is plagued by awkward tipping requests or vague pressure to pay extra for what should be a complete experience. If Delta wants to maintain its leading position in the industry, they need to put an end to practices like this.
