Discovering Delicious Malaysian Prawn Noodles at Bukit Batok

As soon as I stepped into a local eatery in Bukit Batok, I was immediately drawn to the Chin Choon Prawn Noodle. This prawn noodle dish is unlike any I’ve ever tried before. It’s generously coated in a rich, dark soy sauce that truly embodies the essence of Malaysian flavors. While I’ve sampled various types of char siew noodles in Singapore, this was my first encounter with Malaysian-style prawn noodles!

A Variety of Noodle Choices

Chin Choon Prawn Noodle stands out not only for its prawn noodle dish but also for its diverse selection of pork offal, served either in soup or alongside the noodles. On my first visit, I had the choice of five different types of noodles: rice vermicelli, thick egg noodles, small noodles, flat rice noodles, and yellow noodles. I decided to go for the dry Prawn Noodle priced at just 4.50 SGD. When my dish arrived, I was pleasantly surprised to find a generous serving of flat rice noodles hidden beneath the heap of toppings.

The dish was served abundantly with four halved prawns, bean sprouts, slices of pork, fish cake, lettuce, and a sprinkle of golden fried garlic. The glistening golden garlic on top was so enticing that it made me think of the name "black beauty" for this bowl of noodles!

A Flavor to Remember

The flat rice noodles seemed like the perfect choice to pair with the dark soy sauce and smoky chili. I savored the deliciousness from the very first bite, as a gentle heat glided down my throat. Each piece of fried garlic acted like a supporting band, occasionally adding a touch of richness and an aromatic fragrance, elevating the dish.

The fresh prawns were firm and satisfying, and even if you’re not a fan of fatty pork, you’ll likely enjoy the pork here. Personally, I found it a bit dry, but the fish cake was commendably thick and a step up from the industrial versions typically found.

Alluring Pork Offal Noodles

After enjoying the prawn noodles, I moved on to the Pork Offal Noodles priced at 5.50 SGD. This time, I chose yellow noodles and opted for the soup version. The dish was hearty, filled with pork kidneys, fresh lettuce, and bean sprouts.

Before diving in, I tasted the soup and was instantly uplifted. The broth was light and sweet, as if it captured all the essence from the prawn shells. The yellow noodles were cooked just right—crispy and crunchy—perfectly complementing the lettuce and bean sprouts, making for a delightful meal.

The pork kidneys here are quite exceptional. They were tender and had an incredibly pure flavor, which is quite rare in casual eateries.

Conclusion

This culinary adventure truly took me by surprise. The prawn noodles at Chin Choon Prawn Noodle are special not only because of the dark soy sauce but also due to the unique combination of ingredients. Although the place is small, it’s conveniently located near a lovely green park, and the pleasant weather makes dining here all the more enjoyable. If I have the chance, I will definitely return to Bukit Batok to savor this delicious dish once again!
