What’s Happening with British Airways Service?

Recently, I had the chance to fly with British Airways, and I was genuinely shocked by the quality of service. While the overall travel experience, including the T5 First lounge and check-in procedures, seemed to have improved, the in-flight service was anything but consistent.

Unbelievable Moments

One amusing incident occurred when I was walking down the aisle with a flight attendant. I stopped, expecting them to let me pass, but they walked right by without a word of acknowledgment. I thought perhaps it was just a momentary oversight.

However, what was more concerning was the frequent blockage of the aisle near the restrooms. There were many occasions when flight attendants stood chatting in the aisle and didn't budge when I approached. I had to ask them repeatedly to get by, and they didn’t seem to apologize or even notice my presence.

Struggles with Soft Drinks

On another occasion, when I requested a can of Coke Zero, they handed me a warm can with no ice or cup. These issues might not seem significant when viewed individually, but collectively, they create a sense that the staff is completely unaware of the passengers’ needs.

Surprisingly, neither they nor my wife were ever checked on during the flight. Whenever I glanced over, they were just chatting among themselves. Even when I turned on the service light, they didn’t come to assist, forcing me to awkwardly make my way to the back to ask for a warm Coke. These little details in service really detracted from my flying experience.

A Comparison with Other Airlines

When compared to other airlines, where staff are always attentive to passengers’ movements and interactions, BA's service feels quite lacking. This isn’t about class or seat type; I don’t think it matters whether I’m flying business or economy. What’s crucial here is a fundamental awareness of service.

I genuinely feel frustrated if my staff treated customers like this. The service quality is deteriorating; while it might have been charming on short flights, long-haul flights with BA have now become a nightmare.

The Disappearing Essence of British Culture

With great respect for British culture, I’ve noticed that there are fewer traces of the world-class service I once knew. Traditional British service is now a rarity, found only in a few small places in the UK. It seems that service has become too casual, and this is clearly reflected at BA.

Overall, while BA is investing in their products, the small details in service are ruining the experience. I hope they will improve soon so that I don’t have to feel disappointed every time I fly with them.
