Discovering Guan’s in SS4
I have a soft spot for local coffee shops. The cozy atmosphere, the enticing aroma of coffee, and the lively chatter all around create a perfect space for relaxation. However, I’m not a fan of the stuffy, hot settings often found in traditional kopitiams. So, when I stumbled upon Guan’s in SS4, PJ, I knew I had to check it out.
Located on a street corner, the café features an eye-catching sign and large windows inviting passersby to peek inside. There’s also an outdoor seating area for those who enjoy being close to nature, but I prefer the comfort of the air-conditioned interior. As soon as I stepped inside, my eyes were drawn to the vibrant drinks counter, where a few staff members were busy preparing beverages and pastries. Next to the drinks counter was a glass display showcasing an array of pastries and Guan’s products.
A Tempting Menu
At Guan’s, the menu is packed with enticing options. Dishes like Chicken Chop (RM23.90), Big Breakfast (RM32.90), and Pomodoro Pappardelle (RM19.90) made my decision quite difficult. In the end, I opted for the Nasi Lemak Sambal Prawn (RM19.90) and a glass of Iced Milk Tea (RM5.90).
My plate of nasi lemak wasn’t overly large but was quite satisfying, featuring coconut rice, bright red sambal tumis, four prawns coated in a light sambal, green beans, half a boiled egg, fried anchovies, roasted peanuts, and sliced cucumber. The rice was a bit lighter in color than what I usually expect, which initially made me skeptical. However, upon tasting it, the distinct coconut flavor came through beautifully. The taste was neither too strong nor too bland—just right.
Must-Try Delights
The sambal tumis had the perfect thickness, which I really enjoyed. It maintained a smooth consistency without any large chunks, indicating that the ingredients had been finely blended before cooking. The flavor offered a delightful balance of sweetness with a hint of spice, which surprised me because the deep red color of the sambal made me think it would be spicier. Indeed, you can’t judge sambal by its color!

Now, onto the star of the dish—the sambal prawns. There were only four prawns on my plate, but I wasn’t complaining as they looked quite large and promising. Before trying the prawns, I took a moment to sample the sambal. Suddenly, I was hit by a pleasant surprise of spice. While it wasn’t overwhelmingly hot, I was taken aback because I expected it to be sweeter based on the flavor of the sambal tumis.
Thoughts on the Nasi Lemak
The prawns were incredibly fresh and tender, perfectly complementing the robust sambal flavor. It was clear that they had been carefully selected—no sliminess, and they were nicely cleaned. Even though I’m not a big fan of vegetables, I decided to try the green beans. Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed with their texture. They were somewhat chewy and not as crunchy as I had hoped, which made me reluctant to eat more.
When I combined all the elements, I was genuinely impressed. The sweet sambal tumis paired with the spicy sambal prawns and coconut rice created a fantastic flavor experience. I found myself savoring every bite, not wanting this delightful combination to end.
Enjoying the Excellent Iced Milk Tea
While enjoying my nasi lemak, I occasionally sipped on the iced milk tea, served in a metal cup to keep the drink chilled. This café truly struck the perfect balance with the ice, unlike many other places I’ve tried, where it’s either too much or not enough. The tea was brewed with the perfect ratio of milk, tea, and sugar.
My companion ordered Kaya Butter Toast (RM4.90) and Cham Ice (RM5.90). The toast was served crustless, creating a delightful experience with the fluffy white bread that he loved. He mentioned that in some kopitiams, the crust can be too tough to chew. Before diving in, he inspected the inside of the Kaya Butter Toast and was pleased with the generous amount of kaya and butter, both softened perfectly. After taking a bite, he praised the toast for being well-grilled and crispy. The combination of kaya and butter created a harmonious blend of sweetness with a hint of saltiness.
A Few Things to Note
However, every perfect dish has its flaws, and for this meal, it was the Cham Ice. Although it looked similar to my iced milk tea, it lacked a distinct coffee flavor, primarily tasting of tea, sugar, and ice. In short, the balance was off.
In conclusion, Guan’s has brought a refreshing vibe to the kopitiam scene. I thoroughly enjoyed the food and attentive service here. Even with its modern design, the café retains the classic atmosphere I love—without the noise from the older crowd. Will I return to Guan’s in the future? Absolutely! And I’ll definitely bring a few friends along. With the charm of this place, I’m sure they’ll love it just as much as I did.
