Embarking on a Journey to Yading: Exploring Nature's Hidden Gem
If you're looking for the quickest way to reach Yading, simply book a flight to Daocheng Yading Airport. This airport is one of the highest in the world, perched at an impressive altitude of 4,411 meters. You can easily find direct flights from major cities like Chengdu, Chongqing, or Kunming. The flight takes about 1-2 hours and costs around $261.
Once you arrive at the airport, it will take you roughly two hours to get to Shangri-La Town. Keep in mind that you'll need to arrange for someone to pick you up in advance, as the airport is quite remote and hailing a taxi or catching a bus can be challenging. A taxi ride from the airport to Shangri-La will set you back about 400 CNY.
Be sure to prepare your body for the altitude, as the risk of altitude sickness here is significant. Drink plenty of water, take it slow, and rest up before continuing your adventure!
Taking the Bus from Shangri-La, Yunnan
This option is both practical and enjoyable if you're exploring Yunnan. From Shangri-La City, you can catch a bus to Yading. Make sure to stop by the bus station to purchase your ticket in advance, which costs around 148 CNY. There are two departures each day: one in the morning around 8:20 AM and another in the early afternoon.

The bus travels directly to Shangri-La Town without passing through Daocheng. The journey lasts about six hours and takes you through some incredibly scenic routes. Don’t forget to pack some snacks, as the stops only feature a few kiosks selling fruit and some rather rustic restrooms!
Starting Your Journey from Chengdu
If time is not a concern, you can begin your adventure from Chengdu with a thrilling bus ride to Daocheng. However, I wouldn't recommend this option, as the journey can take between 12 to 15 hours and the bus can get quite crowded. Once you arrive in Daocheng, you’ll need to switch to another bus to reach Shangri-La.
Important Tips Before Heading to Yading
Purchase your bus ticket in advance: Foreign travelers can’t book bus tickets through apps, so it’s essential to arrive at the bus station early to ensure you get a ticket and secure your departure time.
Altitude and health: If you're not accustomed to high altitudes, consider resting in Daocheng or stopping at higher altitude spots like Dali or Lijiang first, to help your body acclimatize.
Dress appropriately: The weather in Yading can be unpredictable, so pack warm, waterproof clothing, sunglasses, and sunscreen. And don’t forget sturdy hiking shoes!
My Personal Experience Traveling to Yading from Shangri-La
I purchased my bus ticket from Shangri-La City, Yunnan to Shangri-La in Sichuan the day before. We left the bus station at 8:20 AM, with a ticket costing around $21. The ride lasted over six hours, and while the journey was a bit bumpy, the stunning views made it all worthwhile.
The rest stops were quite "rustic," in true Chinese style, which I found added to the adventure. Finally, I arrived in Yading, exhausted but thrilled, knowing that breathtaking sights awaited me ahead.
