A software company found itself in a series of comical yet challenging situations while organizing a retreat in Honduras. Join us as we explore this captivating story.

The Quirky Tale in Honduras

In 2017, Plex took 120 remote employees to Honduras for a week-long Survivor-style retreat. Just three weeks before the event, the hotel manager unexpectedly resigned, leaving a farewell message: "Good luck with your retreat!" To make matters worse, the head chef left just three days later, signaling that things were already going downhill.

The road to the resort was unpaved, and guard towers equipped with rifles lined the route. Everyone was advised to avoid salads due to the questionable water used for washing vegetables. Nevertheless, the CEO of Plex decided to indulge in some greens and ended up contracting E. Coli on the very first day.

A Challenging Program

They invited a Navy SEAL to conduct team-building exercises with the staff. However, this military expert was not accustomed to leading sports teams and remarked that he had never seen a group so unfit. The workouts took place in sweltering 40-degree Celsius heat, which was far from ideal for a software company.

The new chef at the resort had never catered to such a large group, resulting in meals consisting of raw or undercooked meat. The team ventured to a deserted island, but due to the small plane's capacity of only eight passengers per trip, 20 people were stranded there as night fell.

A Series of Mistakes

Plex's executives were eager to treat their 120 employees to a week in a tropical paradise, but what followed was a string of blunders. Instead of a team-building adventure, they faced bizarre challenges, including eating dead tarantulas.

A hedgehog wandered into a room, and one employee accidentally fell into a fire ant mound, resulting in hives. The meeting resembled an investigation rather than a vacation, with a beautiful seaside backdrop. Interestingly, despite the chaos, employees remembered the experience fondly as a bonding moment, turning it into a company legend.

Lessons Learned

It’s clear that the staff forged a strong bond through the hardships they faced. I’ve always been skeptical of company events, picnics, or trust-building exercises. But it seems that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Survivors who endure together create a unique connection.

Warnings were evident everywhere—from the loss of key leadership to the remote location with poor infrastructure and extreme heat. There were too many vulnerabilities, making it easy for problems to pile up. However, when a director has an unconventional view of the event, they may push others to participate, especially when no one dares to question or voice concerns.

Post-Disaster Reflection

One lesson learned is to avoid organizing outrageous events, but it’s also important to turn negative experiences into opportunities and integrate them into the company culture. As one expert said, "People bond through challenges." Perhaps putting employees through discomfort and self-doubt can actually be a more effective team-building activity than simply having fun.

A famous quote from the poet Virgil states, "Perhaps one day it will be a pleasure to remember these things." This reflects how difficulties can transform into cherished memories in the future. Those loyal to American Airlines and Marriott understand this well, even as we await our well-deserved rewards.
