Kickstart Your Day Like a King

Memphis is hailed as the birthplace of rock 'n' roll, the very place where the legendary Elvis Presley took flight. To celebrate the 90th anniversary of Elvis's first performance here, I set out on a rock 'n' roll journey to explore the legacy of the King.

I began my day with a royal breakfast at Arcade Restaurant, a family-owned diner with a retro vibe located on South Main Street. Open since 1919, this spot serves up some of Elvis's favorite dishes, including peanut butter and banana sandwiches, a staple he often enjoyed before heading to the recording studio.

First Stop: Sun Studio

After breakfast, I made my way to Sun Studio on Union Avenue. This iconic venue was opened by Sam Phillips in 1950, funded by the profits from what is considered the first rock 'n' roll song, "Rocket 88" by Ike Turner. This is the birthplace of music legends like Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis.

The tour here offers a deep dive into the history of rock 'n' roll. I listened to famous recordings, admired priceless memorabilia, and even had the chance to stand in the very studio where Elvis recorded. I even got to sing into the microphone that Elvis once used!

Exploring the Rock 'n' Soul Museum

Continuing my adventure, I visited the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum. Here, I learned about the evolution of rock 'n' roll, from its folk roots to the golden age of blues and soul in the 50s and 60s. The exhibits showcased rare instruments, performance outfits, and personal artifacts from the artists themselves.

A Stroll Down Beale Street

No trip to Memphis would be complete without a visit to Beale Street – a famous thoroughfare known not only for its blues music but also as a path walked by artists like Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis. I began my stroll at the Elvis statue on Beale Street, a tribute to a dazzling era of music.

I stopped by the Memphis Music Hall of Fame to pay homage to the musical legends who changed the world. Afterward, I chose one of the local bars to soak in the life-changing melodies.

Standing on Elvis's Stage

At Overton Park Shell, I found myself on the very stage where Elvis performed in his first paid concert on July 30, 1954. This venue still hosts musical events throughout the year, with the standout being the ShellDaze Music Festival in April.

Discovering Graceland

No journey would be complete without a visit to Graceland – Elvis's sprawling 14-acre estate. Here, I explored unique rooms and paid my respects at Elvis's gravesite on the grounds. Across the street lies Elvis Presley’s Memphis entertainment complex, where I could check out Elvis's collection of vintage cars and airplanes.

Exploring the Cooper-Young Arts District

In the Cooper-Young Historic District, I felt the ongoing flow of creativity. This area is filled with historic homes, unique restaurants, and interesting bars. Notably, Goner Records – a music store and record label that keeps the rock 'n' roll spirit alive in the city.

Ending at Earnestine & Hazel’s

Finally, I wrapped up my day at Earnestine & Hazel’s – a legendary bar in downtown Memphis. Dubbed one of the most iconic bars in the South, it features what is said to be the best jukebox in America. This place is also rich with mysterious tales surrounding the spirits of sisters Earnestine and Hazel.

I left Memphis with my heart full of emotions, enriched by the music, delicious food, and unforgettable experiences.
