A Journey on the Royal Clipper: Not Your Typical Cruise Experience

Imagine stepping onto a cruise ship only to find that everyone around you doesn't actually like cruising. Sounds a bit ironic, right? Yet, that's exactly the situation I found myself in during my first voyage with Star Clippers—a week of adventure across the Caribbean on the Royal Clipper. It all kicked off the moment I boarded in Barbados. Standing on the Sun Deck, gazing up at the towering five masts of the Royal Clipper, another passenger pointed to two massive ships in the harbor and exclaimed, "Thank goodness we’re not on those!" I chuckled and replied, "Absolutely, no to those big ships!" Every time we spotted a large cruise liner, someone would chime in, "I'm so glad we're on this ship!"

Royal Clipper: Small Ship, Big Presence

I had previously experienced a large cruise, but it didn't quite resonate with me. In contrast, smaller cruises, like those to Antarctica in 2018 and Eastern Canada in 2019, completely captivated me. Smaller ships can access hard-to-reach destinations, avoid overcrowding, and foster a more intimate atmosphere where mingling with fellow travelers feels effortless. That's when I discovered Star Clippers and their enchanting Grenadines itinerary.

The Royal Clipper is the largest vessel in Star Clippers’ fleet, accommodating up to 230 passengers, but my journey featured just 199 guests. This made for a distinctly different experience compared to larger cruise lines—no fighting for deck chairs or waiting in long lines for activities.

Climbing the Masts: A Unique Adventure

One of the most exciting offerings from Star Clippers is the chance to climb the masts to reach the crow's nest. It might sound a bit daunting, but I couldn't resist! Typically, mast climbing happens twice during the voyage, but my trip included it four times. About five people would gear up with cameras, strap on safety harnesses, and ascend the rope ladder. The view from the crow's nest is indescribable, showcasing the entire ship and distant islands.

Swimming Off the Back of the Ship: An Amazing Experience

However, my absolute favorite activity was swimming right off the back of the ship. The sports team would lower the platform when the ship was anchored, letting down ropes and inflatable rafts so everyone could jump into the sea. Just imagine the thrill of looking up at the ship from the water—truly spectacular! I had two fantastic swimming sessions in Martinique and St. Lucia, each filled with joy, especially while swimming against the backdrop of St. Lucia’s enchanting Pitons.

Photo Safari on the Final Day

On the last day of the journey, weather permitting, you can join a photo safari. The group boards small boats that circle the ship as the sails are raised, creating a breathtaking spectacle. My safari took place in Soufrière, St. Lucia, with the majestic Pitons as a backdrop and the golden Caribbean sunlight illuminating the ship—an image that left everyone in awe.
