Stepping foot in Saigon for the first time can be overwhelming. As you sit in a taxi confidently giving the driver your destination, you might suddenly hear the question, "Which district?" and realize, "Wait, didn't they get rid of districts?" The truth is, they did and they didn't. Although the city is now divided into wards, locals and even foreigners still refer to Saigon by its old district names.

These districts are not just names; they embody unique vibes and lifestyles. If you're new to the city (or just want to understand it better), let's explore the distinctive features of each area in Saigon together!

(Formerly) District 1: The Sleepless Heart

New names: Saigon, Tan Dinh, Ben Thanh, Cau Ong Lanh. If this is your first visit to Saigon, you will definitely find yourself in District 1. This area is the liveliest center of the city, filled with noise, excitement, and bustling energy. You can find everything within walking distance: rooftop bars, sidewalk eateries, boutique hotels, co-working spaces, and historical sites.

This is where “touristy” meets “unmissable.” Don’t forget to stroll down Bui Vien Walking Street, snap some photos at Ben Thanh Market, and enjoy the serene atmosphere near the iconic Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica.

(Formerly) District 2: The Expat Hub

New names: An Khanh, Thu Thiem (part of Thu Duc City). As you cross the river, everything seems to slow down. District 2, especially Thao Dien, transforms Saigon into a global village. Here, you’ll find brunch culture, yoga studios, organic food shops, and international schools.

If you want to escape the hustle and bustle but still enjoy great coffee and delicious food, District 2 is the perfect choice. It’s the best area to indulge in Western restaurants in Saigon, offering everything from brunch spots to romantic venues for a date night.

(Formerly) District 3: The Cool Kid Energy

New names: Ban Co, Xuan Hoa, Nhiu Loc. If District 1 is the star of the show, then District 3 is the cool best friend. This area is greener, calmer, and has a trendy vibe without trying too hard. Here, you’ll discover some of the best cafes in Saigon, tucked away in old villas or hidden down leafy alleys.

District 3 is perfect for relaxing mornings and creative afternoons. When the sun sets, head to Turtle Lake to enjoy street snacks, iced tea, and take a stroll around the famous Tan Dinh Church.

(Formerly) District 4: A Taste of Local Flavor

New names: Xom Chieu, Khanh Hoi, Vinh Hoi. Crossing a bridge from District 1, everything suddenly feels different. District 4 exudes an honest, authentic vibe that is hard to resist. There aren’t many fancy cafes or international brands here; instead, you’ll find bustling street corners, plastic chairs, and some of the best street food in Saigon.

Especially the snails – there are countless varieties to try. Head to Vinh Khanh Street for delicious snail dishes, cold beer, and tempting late-night snacks.

(Formerly) District 5: The Soul of Cholon

New names: Cho Quan, An Dong, Cho Lon. Welcome to Cholon, Saigon’s historic Chinatown! District 5 is dense, vibrant, and full of culture that you can feel immediately. Here, there’s a strong interplay of Chinese and Vietnamese cultures, from incense-filled temples to traditional herbal medicine shops and eateries.

Don’t forget to wander through Cholon, explore the Fabric Market, or get lost in Trang Tri Street during festive seasons. It’s truly chaotic yet strangely captivating.

(Formerly) Binh Thanh District: The Foodie Paradise

New names: Gia Dinh, Binh Thanh, Binh Loi Trung, Thanh My Tay, Binh Quoi. Just next to District 1, but feeling much more local. Binh Thanh is the ideal spot when you want everything without facing the chaos of District 1. This area is packed with hidden dining gems, from street food to trendy eateries.

The highlight? Pham Viet Chanh Street – home to boutique bars, Japanese restaurants, and a relaxed, enjoyable atmosphere. Here, you’ll find restaurants like Fortune Ivy, Pickles Eatery, Santorino, and bars like RetroSaigon - Craft Beer, Nong Trai Khoai, along with cafes like Trap Space and Times House.

(Formerly) District 7: The Suburban Getaway from the Hustle

New names: Tan Thuan Tay, Tan Phong, Tan Quy, Phu My. With wide streets, modern buildings, and a completely different pace of life. District 7 is often considered the "suburb" of Saigon, especially favored by families and long-term expats. There is a strong Korean community here, making it the perfect spot for K-BBQ cravings.

Visit Phu My Hung for parks, shopping areas, and a smoother city life. Notable spots include Panda BBQ, Antico Fornaio, À La Main Café, along with Crescent Lake Park and shopping centers like Crescent Mall, SC VivoCity, and LOTTE Mart.

Are the Districts Still Important?

Theoretically, no, but in reality, yes. Even though the new ward system has been established, district names remain how locals experience Saigon. They indicate what kind of day you’ll have. Saigon has so much more to offer – this is just the beginning.

Stay tuned for Part 2!
