This article discusses Hawaiian Airlines' official change of its flight code from 'HA' to 'AS' during its merger with Alaska Airlines, marking the end of an era in the airline's history.
A Step Forward in the Merger Process
In September 2024, the merger of Hawaiian Airlines with Alaska Airlines was officially completed. From that moment onward, Hawaiian Airlines became part of the Alaska Air Group, though the integration process is still unfolding gradually. Today marks one of the most significant milestones in this journey.
While there has been talk of Hawaiian joining the oneworld alliance, today brings another important change: Hawaiian Airlines' two-letter flight code 'HA' has officially been replaced.
Flight Code Change
Similar to other airlines, both Hawaiian and Alaska use two-letter codes for their flight numbers. Hawaiian had been using the code 'HA', while Alaska uses 'AS'. As of today (April 22, 2026), all Hawaiian flight numbers will now carry the code 'AS'. For example, if you're searching for a flight between Honolulu (HNL) and Maui (OGG) operated by Hawaiian, you'll see it listed under the code 'AS'.
To facilitate this transition, Hawaiian implemented a two-step process. On October 26, 2025, all Hawaiian flight numbers began transitioning to the range of 800-1299, while still retaining the 'HA' code. This change coincided with the start of the IATA winter season and marked a significant shift for the airline.
Why a Two-Step Process?
Why take this process in two steps? The aim was to simplify the transition from 'HA' to 'AS', as this is a major technological undertaking. The 'HA' code has been in continuous use since 1929, existing for nearly a century before being retired. For many brand loyalists, this change carries a lot of emotional weight.

Despite the change in flight numbers, both airlines continue to maintain their distinct brands. This means that when you board a Hawaiian flight, you will still hear the crew refer to this airline by its name.
The Current Status of the Hawaiian and Alaska Merger
With today's milestone, the merger process between Alaska and Hawaiian is considered approximately 75% complete. The airlines have adopted a single loyalty program, a common operating certificate, and a unified passenger service system. However, new labor agreements are still needed to officially finalize this merger.
This process primarily does not directly impact passengers, but the goal is to complete everything by 2027. However, due to the large volume of contracts involved, this timeline may extend longer than anticipated.
Changes Between Flights
A change that directly affects current customers is the optimization of aircraft for routes to maximize profitability. Currently, Boeing 787s are being branded as Alaska to establish a long-haul hub in Seattle (SEA). While not entirely part of the merger, Hawaiian’s Airbus A330s need interior upgrades to remain competitive, with this project expected to commence in 2028.
Conclusion: An Era Comes to a Close
April 22 marks a significant turning point for Hawaiian Airlines. Not only has it joined the oneworld alliance, but the 'HA' code has also been retired, fully replaced by 'AS'. While Hawaiian flights still carry the Hawaiian brand, they no longer use Hawaiian flight numbers. Indeed, it is the end of an era!
As the merger between Alaska and Hawaiian nears completion, aside from a few new labor contracts, what do you think about this change at Hawaiian Airlines?
