Southwest Airlines has announced an increase in baggage fees less than a year after ending its free baggage policy. Customers should prepare for this news.

New Baggage Fees After a Free Period

Less than a year after concluding its "free checked baggage" policy, Southwest Airlines has decided to raise the fees for checked luggage. On April 7, the airline announced that the fee for checking one bag will increase from $35 to $45, marking a $10 hike, which is about a 28% increase.

When the New Fees Take Effect

The new fee structure will apply to all tickets booked from Thursday, April 9, onwards. The Dallas-based airline has also increased the fee for a second checked bag by an additional $10.

Reasons for the Fee Increase

This change comes amid soaring fuel prices due to a spike in global oil prices. Southwest stated that the adjustment in baggage fees is a result of "ongoing analysis of business operations and the changing global landscape."

A Competitive Airline Market

This adjustment is not happening in isolation. Just last week, JetBlue and United Airlines announced increases in baggage fees, and Delta Air Lines followed suit on Tuesday. U.S. airlines typically adjust baggage pricing in tandem.

Free Baggage for Loyal Customers

However, A-List members in Southwest's Rapid Rewards loyalty program will still enjoy baggage benefits, as will those holding co-branded credit cards with Southwest. This is a significant perk for frequent flyers with the airline.

The Cost Storm

Currently, three of the four largest U.S. airlines have raised baggage fees in the past week, with only American Airlines maintaining its rates for now. This indicates a significant shift in operational practices and policies among domestic airlines.

Rapid Changes in Baggage Policy

Previously, Southwest had offered free checked baggage for two bags to all customers for many years, but this policy ended in May of last year when the airline began implementing major changes to its rules and policies, including a designated seating system.

Conclusion

With this change, passengers should prepare for new costs when flying with Southwest Airlines. The increase in baggage fees presents a new challenge for frequent users of the airline's services.
