The scenery is enchanting, especially at sunset or when the morning mist rolls in. However, Salento has become quite crowded with tourists, prompting me to share some alternative options for experiencing local culture and tranquility.

Is Salento Still Worth Visiting?

Salento is still a worthwhile destination, but it’s essential to note that it’s transforming into a bustling tourist city. I’ve witnessed this change during two visits nearly a decade apart. Once a quiet town with around 7,000 residents, Salento has evolved into an international tourist hub. While this isn’t necessarily a negative development, it has prompted some locals to relocate due to rising living costs.

Filandia: A Colorful Village

If you’re seeking a more peaceful alternative to Salento, consider a visit to Filandia, just a 30-minute drive away. The atmosphere here is much more relaxed, featuring delightful cafes and restaurants serving delicious local cuisine. I stayed at Bidea Hostel, a cozy and budget-friendly option perfect for those looking to save. Filandia offers plenty of exciting activities, such as visiting coffee farms, mountain biking, or trekking to hidden waterfalls nestled within the forests.

How to Get to Filandia

To reach Filandia, you can start from the city of Armenia. Buses run from the Armenia bus station to Filandia every 20 minutes, with the journey taking about 45 minutes. If you're in Pereira, you can also catch a bus, though they run slightly less frequently. A handy tip: if you’re traveling to Armenia from Pereira or Manizales, ask the driver to drop you off at Las Cruces. There are a few eateries there, and you can wait for the bus to Filandia, saving you some travel time.

From Filandia to Cocora Valley

To get to Cocora from Filandia, you can catch a jeep directly from the main square at 8:40 AM, 10:40 AM, 12:40 PM, 2:10 PM, 4:10 PM, and 6:10 PM. The fare is about 5,500 COP, and the ride takes approximately 40 minutes. Once you arrive in Salento, you can hop on another jeep to Cocora, or if you’re feeling adventurous, you can hike around the valley, which takes about four hours for a complete loop.

Samaria & Salamina: Fresh New Destinations

Another lesser-known option is Salamina and the Samaria Valley. These two spots are close to Cocora but receive fewer visitors, offering a more unique experience. Although the route can be a bit complicated, if you love exploring, you won’t be disappointed.

Salamina is a small town with colorful colonial-style houses perched on a hill, surrounded by stunning landscapes. There aren’t many organized activities here, but you can freely walk around, immersing yourself in local life. It’s also an ideal starting point for your journey to Valle de la Samaria, a serene place perfect for those wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of Cocora.

New Discoveries from Samaria

During my stay in Salamina, I chose Bonsai Hotel Salamina, a fantastic and reasonably priced accommodation with friendly hosts. From here, you can easily embark on treks to Valle de la Samaria. Simply explore and enjoy the pristine beauty that this area has to offer.

What’s special is that you can find peaceful moments in nature, far away from the crowds in Salento or Cocora. I truly believe that exploring hidden villages like Filandia and Salamina will provide you with richer experiences during your travels in Colombia.
