Explore 6 stunning hiking trails in São Miguel, Azores, offering unique trekking experiences for every traveler.

Introduction to Hiking Trails in São Miguel

São Miguel, an island in the Azores archipelago, is renowned for its breathtaking hiking trails. The trekking spots here cater to both beginners and seasoned trekkers, with routes that are not only accessible but also marked clearly, showcasing impressive landscapes. Unlike Madeira, which features more challenging paths, São Miguel offers easier options while still providing stunning views.

A helpful tip for travelers is to rent a car, as public transport rarely reaches the trailheads. We stayed in Ponta Delgada, an ideal base for exploring the rest of the island.

1. PRC37 Janela do Inferno

PRC37 is one of the most memorable hikes in São Miguel! This 7.5 km trail winds through lush green fields, cool dense forests, and moss-covered stone bridges. Notably, you'll traverse a few narrow tunnels, so don’t forget to bring a flashlight. The highlight of this trail is the Janela do Inferno waterfall, also known as the "Gate of Hell," which cascades from a small cave into a serene lake below.

Although there was no water flowing when we visited, it's wise to check recent reviews before you go. A little tip: hike clockwise, starting from the open fields and finishing in the mysterious wooded tunnels. After your trek, don’t miss the Água de Fogo food truck in the parking lot, serving delicious burgers and fries—perfect for a post-hike meal!

2. Parque da Grená Waterfall Trail

Located near the hot springs of Furnas, Parque da Grená is a lush tropical park reminiscent of Costa Rica! This 4.5 km forest trail takes you past numerous waterfalls, ferns, and wooden walkways. We recommend following this order: 6 → 4 → 3 → 2 → 1 → 5 to avoid the steep 300-500 steps near point 5 and enjoy the highlights. Finally, you’ll arrive at the island's tallest waterfall, nestled among the vibrant green forest and soaring birds.

3. Lagoa do Fogo Trail

Lagoa do Fogo is a stunning volcanic crater lake, making it one of the most famous hiking trails in São Miguel. The path descends steeply from the viewpoint into the crater, where the sparkling turquoise lake rests below majestic volcanic ridges. The descent takes about 30 minutes, and the return trip takes a bit longer, so plan for around 2 hours for the entire hike.

Note that during the summer (from June to September), the road to the trailhead closes after 9 AM. However, a shuttle bus service is available. Each time you hike, you’ll be able to enjoy the peaceful scenery of the lake with its tranquil shores and green peaks.

4. Cascata da Gruta Trail

Cascata da Gruta is one of São Miguel's best-kept secrets, hidden along the tranquil northeastern coast. The trail begins near Lomba de São Pedro and takes you through a forest to an old watermill, Moinho do Félix. From there, the path leads to a waterfall cascading down a large rock. You can even walk right behind the waterfall or dip your feet in the cool waters.

5. Cascata do Limbo Trail

Cascata do Limbo is a short, easy, and incredibly beautiful trail that takes only about 5-10 minutes. The trail starts near the Praia dos Moinhos parking lot, leading you through a small forest to a fairytale-like waterfall. In the summer, this path is surrounded by blooming hydrangeas, the flower symbolizing the Azores.

6. PRC28 SMI Gorreana Tea Plantation Trail

This trail takes you straight through the Gorreana tea fields, the oldest tea plantation in Europe. The 3.5 km PRC28 SMI trail begins and ends at the factory, passing through rows of tea plants, small streams, and viewpoints overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It's one of the most delightful hiking routes in São Miguel.

The ideal time for hiking in São Miguel is from May to October. The trails are dry, the weather is sunny, and flowers are in bloom, especially the hydrangeas, which typically flourish from late June to August.

Useful Information for Vietnamese Travelers

When planning your trip to São Miguel, keep in mind that you do not need a visa for short stays under 90 days. You should fly from Hanoi (HAN) or Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) to Lisbon or Porto, then transfer to São Miguel. Flight costs range from 15 million to 30 million VND, depending on when you book.

Additionally, renting a car is crucial for convenient travel between attractions, as public transport services are not well developed here. Some good hotels in Ponta Delgada to consider are Lusitano Villas or Vila Gale, both offering great locations and services.

Be prepared for quickly changing weather, especially if you plan to hike at higher elevations. Check the weather before your trip to ensure a fantastic trekking experience on this beautiful island!
