Discover the rich flavors at Berempah Bros in Canberra, where you can savor unique dishes infused with vibrant spices. Don't miss the famous Ayam Berempah!
Visit Sengkang for Local Delicacies
While I may not be the first to write about Berempah Bros, the renowned reputation of Derek Cheong, the winner of Masterchef Singapore Season 2, drew me to his second outlet at Bukit Canberra Hawker Centre, conveniently located near me.
As soon as I stepped into the food court, I easily spotted Berempah Bros, thanks to its bright orange sign standing out among the other stalls. If you’ve grown tired of dull signage, this eye-catching orange is sure to grab your attention.
Menu Highlights
My friend and I decided to try the Ayam Berempah (S$7.50), featuring succulent chicken breast. The coconut rice, sprinkled over with breadcrumbs, had a distinct aroma, but I was a bit disappointed to find it resembled the rice used in nasi lemak. The flavor was mild, and I wished it had a bit more depth.
As I cut into the chicken breast with my fork and knife, I was pleasantly surprised to find the meat incredibly juicy. The portion was generous, offering two large pieces of chicken to share.
This Ayam Berempah dish delivered a delightful kick, with the spices blending beautifully with the chicken, making it a true highlight of the restaurant. The aromatic flavors seemed ready to burst, truly embodying the signature dish of the place.

A Challenge with Unagi Berempah
Next, I ordered the Unagi Berempah (S$12), a rather unique dish not commonly found at many eateries. Since eel isn’t a popular choice at street food stalls, I was eager to give it a try.
The eel was slightly tough, and the outer layer was a bit challenging to cut through. The flavor was sweet, with a hint of butter inside. Perhaps I visited on an off day, as I didn’t experience the freshness of the eel as I had hoped.
Both dishes came with a generous helping of sambal, which I loved for its tangy and spicy flavor—perfect for pairing with the coconut rice. Don’t just dip your protein into the sambal; be sure to mix it in with the rice as well.
Who Should Visit Berempah Bros?
This place is fantastic for anyone who enjoys bold flavors from herbs and spices. It's also ideal for those who love adventurous eating. Plus, if you’re a food enthusiast or have a hearty appetite, you definitely won’t be disappointed with the portions here.
Getting to Berempah Bros
Berempah Bros is located on Old Nelson Road. The nearest MRT station is Sembawang (NS11), and you should exit through Door D for the quickest route. Alternatively, you can take a bus and stop at the bus stop after Admiral Hill.
Review of Berempah Bros
I wholeheartedly recommend trying Berempah Bros. With its rich flavors and diverse spices, especially the ayam berempah, it truly is a must-visit spot. Both dishes were delicious and balanced enough to impress any diner.
