Affectionately known as the White City by locals, Arequipa is arguably the most livable city in Peru. Nestled at the foot of three majestic cone-shaped volcanoes, it enjoys a perpetually spring-like climate. Beyond its stunning scenery, these volcanoes provide sillar, a luminous white stone used in the city’s architecture. With its array of bars, art galleries, and ideal climate, you'll definitely want to linger a little longer.

Arequipa sits conveniently on the route from Lima and Huacachina to the popular tourist destination of Cusco. Yet, even without its prime location, travelers flock here to immerse themselves in its breathtaking landscapes. The city attracts many South American tourists seeking sunshine and cultural experiences. With plenty of short trips available, integrating Arequipa into your itinerary is a breeze.

I found Arequipa to be a haven for backpackers—a place where you can easily get lost in its vibrant life. After spending weeks at a remote archaeological site, I treated myself to five days of exploring cafes, museums, and celebrating Peru's Independence Festival. Time flew by, and I decided to extend my stay for another five days.

While the bus travel times might seem daunting for those unfamiliar with Peru, Arequipa is quite accessible. Most travelers arrive from Huacachina or Lima on their way to Cusco. It takes just six hours from Puno on Lake Titicaca, and even the 15-hour journey from La Paz is manageable.

In Arequipa, you have a choice between two main areas: the bustling city center or the tranquil Yanahuara district, which offers stunning views of the mountains. I opted for the city center as it has the highest concentration of hostels. In Latin cities, you often have to deal with traffic noise, but the center of Arequipa is surprisingly quiet, comfortable, and close to all attractions.

The Yanahuara area also has its unique charm. If you ask locals, they'll guide you to the best dining and entertainment spots in Yanahuara. Here, you can experience the authentic life of Arequipa residents and enjoy breathtaking views of the city from the Mirador Yanahuara, designed with beautiful sillar stone columns framing the volcanic peaks.

Must-See Experiences in Arequipa

Santa Catalina Monastery: While you might get tired of visiting religious sites during your travels, this monastery truly stands out. In fact, it feels more like a small city within Arequipa than just a building. As you enter through the gates, you’ll discover a serene maze filled with fountains, gardens, chapels, and courtyards. The colors here are mesmerizing, with streets adorned with geraniums and painted in turquoise or earthy red hues. I ended up taking over 100 photos!

Founded over 400 years ago as a home for nuns, Santa Catalina still houses a large religious community in areas not open to tourists. I could hear their singing and prayers as I wandered through the monastery. Many rooms are preserved as they were, making you feel like you’re traveling back in time and intruding on someone’s private space.

Andean Sanctuaries Museum: Arequipa wasn’t built on the ruins of an Inca city like many other places in Peru, but the country’s most famous civilization thrived on the surrounding volcanoes. The Incas practiced child sacrifice to the mountain gods, and a 14-year-old girl was taken to the summit of Volcan Misti and perished. Her body was preserved in ice for hundreds of years and was discovered in 1995. The museum now displays her perfectly preserved remains, complete with intact hair and nails. It’s just a few blocks from Plaza de Armas, with an entrance fee of 20 soles.

Alpaca Mundo: Have you ever visited Peru without seeing an alpaca? Alpaca Mundo, a free zoo, gives you the chance to get up close with these iconic animals. I also enjoyed the demonstrations of traditional weaving techniques. Peru’s weaving industry is renowned for its alpacas and their relatives, creating colorful ponchos.

Arequipa is also the perfect place to shop for alpaca wool jackets, which you can find at the San Camillo market or in designer shops in the city center. I bought a baby alpaca wool jacket here, and it quickly became one of my favorite items.
