North Carolina boasts stunning landscapes and serves as the backdrop for many famous movies. Join me as we uncover captivating destinations from the coast to historical sites.
Introducing North Carolina
North Carolina is not just a beautiful state; it's also the setting for a plethora of well-known films and television shows. From heartwarming romances to independent projects and literary adaptations, this state has become a cherished place for countless film enthusiasts.
Many of you might know "The O.C." with its California dream, but let’s not forget that "One Tree Hill" and "Dawson’s Creek" have painted a picturesque image of North Carolina’s coastline. Today, a new generation is discovering this land through "The Summer I Turned Pretty," a standout film on Amazon Prime penned by author Jenny Han.
Exploring the Eastern Coast of North Carolina
I recently enjoyed a fantastic trip along the eastern coast of North Carolina, visiting Wilmington, Wrightsville Beach, New Bern, and Southport—each location offering delightful surprises. This area is the familiar backdrop for many shows like "Dawson’s Creek," "One Tree Hill," and "The Summer I Turned Pretty."
Wilmington, affectionately known as "Wilmywood," has been the filming site for numerous blockbuster movies since the 1980s. I took a horse-drawn carriage ride with Springbrook Farms, exploring iconic filming locations where beloved characters once walked.
A Tour in Chapel Hill
In Chapel Hill, I joined a walking tour of the University of North Carolina, which served as the filming location for many scenes in "The Summer I Turned Pretty," transforming the campus into Finch College. My guide Izzie shared fascinating stories about the production process and interesting spots around the campus.
At Top of the Hill Restaurant and Brewery (TOPO), I savored delicious dishes alongside their famous beers. Later, I visited Epilogue Books Chocolate Brews to try their hot chocolate paired with books—a perfect spot for literature lovers.

Historical Destinations in New Bern
Next up was New Bern, the oldest city in North Carolina and the birthplace of Pepsi. This charming town also serves as the backdrop for three of Nicholas Sparks' famous novels: "A Bend in the Road," "The Wedding," and "The Notebook."
At Tryon Palace, I felt like I stepped through a time portal back to the 18th century. Although the series "Outlander" was filmed in Scotland, North Carolina's rich history has been woven into the novels.
Culinary Delights in New Bern
Don’t forget to indulge in the local cuisine while in New Bern! The dishes at Lawson’s On The Creek offer a fantastic culinary experience, especially their uniquely prepared potatoes. For a more casual option, head to Cypress Hall for creative small plates made from local ingredients.
Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach
When talking about Wilmington, one cannot forget Wrightsville Beach. Here, the sweeping white sands and picturesque harbors have captivated audiences in various television shows.
Elijah’s is a dining spot reminiscent of "Dawson’s Creek." Or stop by The Workshop café in Wrightsville Beach for delicious espresso and a chance to learn about underwater life from local divers.
Ending the Journey in Southport
Southport was the final stop on my journey. This small town, with its quaint beauty and air of mystery, holds many cherished cinematic memories.
North Carolina truly is a wonderful place filled with countless discoveries. The films have evoked special emotions in me, and this trip will undoubtedly remain an unforgettable memory.
