I had no idea just how humid the Pacific coast of Colombia could be until I set foot here. The rain never seems to stop, and that might explain why not many people visit this area. But I didn't come to sunbathe; I came to uncover wild experiences and witness the rich wildlife.
Discovering Bahía Solano: Whale Watching and Untamed Nature on Colombia's Pacific Coast
I had no idea just how humid the Pacific coast of Colombia could be until I set foot here. The rain never seems to stop, and that might explain why not many people visit this area. But I didn't come to sunbathe; I came to uncover wild experiences and witness the rich wildlife.
Bahía Solano, located in the Chocó region, is famous for its pristine beauty and thrilling eco-tourism activities. Despite facing a few damp days, those moments did nothing to diminish the splendor of my trip. Bahía Solano has become the highlight of my adventures in Colombia.
Safety in Bahía Solano
Many people spend time researching safety when it comes to visiting Bahía Solano or Nuquí. According to safety maps, the Chocó area seems to be labeled as unsafe. However, when you zoom in on the map, you’ll find that only the remote forests are problematic. Both Bahía Solano and Nuquí are quite safe for travelers.
I felt very secure during my time in Bahía Solano, even more so than in some of Colombia's larger cities. The local community is incredibly friendly and welcoming, and with police presence around, I had no worries at all.
Destinations on the Pacific Coast
When discussing Colombia's Pacific coast, there are many names to consider. It can be referred to as the Pacific Coast, the Chocó region, or even the vicinity of Utría National Park, which is one of the best-protected areas in the region. I chose to stay in Bahía Solano, specifically at Playa Almejal, about a 45-minute drive from the main town.
Both Bahía Solano and Nuquí are small villages where you can enjoy eco-tourism and relax in simple guesthouses, hostels, or ecolodges. They are well-connected to Medellín through regular flights, making it easy to get here.

Choosing Accommodation in Bahía Solano
To prepare for activities like whale watching, hiking through the forest, and lounging on the wild beaches, I needed to find a place to stay. If you prefer a simple yet cozy lodging option, El Valle would be a perfect choice. However, if you're looking for something a bit more developed, Bahía Solano has some nicer hotels.
I opted to stay at Utria Hostel, which has a friendly and warm atmosphere—ideal for travelers. This hostel features a balcony, bar, and a pool right in front. They offer both dormitory-style and private rooms, along with a shared kitchen for those who want to cook.
Exciting Activities in Bahía Solano
The best time for whale watching in Chocó is from July to mid-October. During my visit in July, whales were spotted everywhere, from offshore waters to close to the shore. Just taking a stroll along the beach, you might see them breaching the surface!
I signed up for a whale-watching tour organized by local fishermen. Just 20 minutes after setting sail, I spotted my first humpback whales. They kept appearing, and it was thrilling to witness such magnificent moments in nature.
Exploring Untamed Nature
Bahía Solano isn't just about whales; it also boasts pristine forests and diverse ecosystems. I enjoyed fantastic hikes along the forest trails, where the sounds of birds and flowing streams became the soundtrack of my trip.
Living amidst untamed nature and breathing in the fresh air was truly a soul-filling experience. I absolutely loved the beaches here, with their soft white sands and crystal-clear waters.
Wrapping Up My Journey
Bahía Solano is undoubtedly an ideal destination for nature lovers looking to escape the hustle and bustle of urban life. It’s not just a place for whale watching, but a chance to experience all that nature has to offer. This land has left me with unforgettable impressions.
If you're searching for a getaway from the busy life, consider visiting Bahía Solano—where adventures await you!
